Sharpen your cutlasses — the swashbuckling film won’t dock until 2027.

Right, so here we are: Ridley Scott and Hugh Jackman are at last teaming up, and about time too. The pair are working on a fresh take of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic, Treasure Island, which just landed its official cinema release date after a fair bit of speculation. Now, if you think you’ve seen this story done every which way before, well, you’d be right. But Scott and Jackman reckon they’ve got something new to say.

Treasure Island opens in UK cinemas on 11 November 2027.

High Stakes, Big Names

Jackman is stepping up as Long John Silver, which should be worth the ticket price alone, and he’s joined by Hugh Grant and Owen Cooper (who got a fair amount of attention from the series Adolescence that aired in 2025). Scott is directing, obviously, and the screenplay’s in the hands of Jack Thorne, who also wrote Adolescence. Handy, since Cooper’s tagging along for this one too.

Bear in mind, Scott and Jackman have genuinely never worked together before. Seems mad when you look at their CVs, but this is the first crossover—so expectations are through the roof. The plan is for a much grittier, grown-up version of Treasure Island than the ones you might remember, say, with The Muppets or Disney’s old animated stab, Treasure Planet. Not a felt frog or robot in sight this time.

Streaming Rivals and Old Favourites

Now, if you assumed this was the only new Treasure Island on the block, think again. There’s competition in the pipeline: MGM+ and Paramount+ are rolling out their own six-part adaptation for streaming, coming out this October. That one’s got Hayley Atwell as the headline name, with Tom Sweet and David Oyelowo (he’s Long John Silver for this version) in the main roles. So, if for some reason one set of A-listers isn’t enough, another lot are waiting in the wings.

  • MGM+/Paramount+ series: streaming from October 2026

To put it plainly, you’ll have a whole year to get over the streaming version before Jackman’s pirate swagger lands on the big screen.

This film’s official synopsis puts Jackman’s Long John Silver front and centre—expect a focus you might not have seen from the Disney or Muppet takes. With Grant and Cooper rounding out the cast, and Sony Pictures backing it for a holiday 2027 launch, there’s an obvious bid here for both spectacle and proper acting chops.
