True Detective veteran returns to HBO, set to co-star in another acclaimed drama.

HBO's crime drama Task already packed a heavyweight punch in its first outing. Apparently, that's not enough. The show just scored Mahershala Ali — yes, the two-time Oscar winner — for Season 2, and if you know anything about Ali's work, you know that's a game-changing move.

Mahershala Ali Joins the Squad

According to Variety, Ali has officially signed on for what HBO is calling ‘a major role’ in the new season. Specifically, he’ll be playing Eddie Barnes, a veteran DEA agent who’s well-respected around Philadelphia. His team, unsurprisingly, gets swept into whatever high-stakes mess is coming next for the 'Task' crew.

The only real plot tease HBO is offering right now? Mark Ruffalo's character Tom Brandis takes charge of a new task force... and then things start to get, let’s say, morally messy. Their words:

'The deeper the operation runs, the harder it is to tell who’s the target.'

So, standard 'everyone might be dirty' HBO crime show fare.

The First Season Setup

A quick refresher: Season 1 landed last September and got pretty enthusiastic reviews for its smart writing and, honestly, just stacked ensemble cast. Ruffalo starred as Brandis, an FBI agent put in charge of a thrown-together team chasing down a string of brutal drug house robberies that ended in two deaths and a missing kid. In classic prestige-TV fashion, nothing was simple, the criminals were complicated, and the story forced viewers to second-guess what 'justice' even means.

The Cast So Far

So now we’ve got Ali and Ruffalo heading up 'Task' Season 2. But it’s worth remembering, last season was already no slouch in the talent department. Here’s a quick rundown of who’s been part of the ensemble so far:

  • Mark Ruffalo
  • Tom Pelphrey
  • Martha Plimpton
  • Raúl Castillo
  • Silvia Dionicio
  • Phoebe Fox
  • Fabien Frankel
  • Emilia Jones
  • Sam Keeley
  • Thuso Mbedu
  • Jamie McShane
  • Alison Oliver

Not a bad lineup, and adding Ali only raises the bar.

Status Check: When's It Coming Back?

So, where are we in the process? Task Season 2 is still in pre-production — meaning there’s no premiere date on the horizon yet. If you’re looking to kill time waiting for it, catch Mahershala Ali wherever you can. His most recent role was opposite dinosaurs (seriously) in last year’s Jurassic World Rebirth, and he's keeping busy:

- He’s voicing a role in Laika’s upcoming stop-motion film Wildwood, due out October 23
- He’ll appear in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, scheduled for 2027
- Plus, an action thriller, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, from Bassam Tariq (no date yet)

In the meantime, if you want to revisit his best work without ditching HBO Max, check out his outstanding turn in True Detective Season 3 — it got him one of his five Emmy nominations so far. (The only one he’s won? Producing a documentary. But if Task Season 2 even comes close to matching the first, those numbers might be about to change.)
