Macon Blair’s new comedy Idiots hits theaters later this summer.

Macon Blair is one of those guys who’s been quietly (or not-so-quietly) turning out interesting stuff on both sides of the camera for a while now. If you’ve been paying attention, you’ve probably seen his face pop up in some big-name projects like Reservoir Dogs and Oppenheimer. But he’s not just making cameos—he’s writing screenplays too (see: The Toxic Avenger and Brothers), and those movies have done pretty well, both in theaters and when you’re scrolling for something new at home.

Now, Blair’s back with his own creation—a new comedy that he both wrote and directed. If you like your comedies a little messy and soaked in poor decisions, this one’s probably going to be right up your alley.

The Story (and the Wild Ride Getting It to Theaters)

This movie actually started life as The Shitheads—not exactly a title you put next to your grandma’s favorite rom-com. It premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, which is about as good a launchpad as you can get for offbeat, independent stuff. The plot: two people, their lives more or less dumpster fires, get thrown together when they’re hired by a sleazy 'transport service' to haul a rich (and wildly troubled) teen to rehab. Predictably, nothing goes smoothly, and they barrel through a series of disasters and questionable choices.

Name Change, Release Date, and Blair's Take

Here’s where things get a little inside-the-industry: The folks over at Independent Film Company (they’re the ones handling the release) decided to give the movie a new name right before its theatrical run. So if you saw it at Sundance as The Shitheads, you’ve got a collector’s item on your hands. Everybody else? You’ll be watching Idiots when it hits theaters on August 28, 2026.

Blair himself admits he got way too attached to that original name—his words:

'I got attached to it and was unable to move away from it. I was just waiting for someone to finally tell me we couldn’t use it.'

Eventually, someone did. And honestly, these title switcheroos happen all the time, especially when someone in marketing starts sweating about what’ll fit on the poster.
