Live-Action Tangled Taps Star Wars Legend for Mystery Role
Disney’s live-action Tangled just went lightspeed: Star Wars standout Diego Luna has officially joined the remake in a mystery role, supercharging the buzz and extending his Disney streak.
Looks like Disney is pulling another big name out of its very extensive address book for the upcoming live-action Tangled remake — and this time, it comes straight from the Star Wars corner of the galaxy. If you’ve been enjoying Diego Luna as Cassian Andor in Rogue One and the surprisingly heavy Disney+ series Andor, get ready: Luna’s officially been cast in Tangled. But in typical Disney fashion, nobody’s saying who he actually plays yet.
Diego Luna’s Mysterious Tangled Role
Diego Luna signing on for Tangled is a pretty big deal. He’s already got a strong track record with Disney, thanks to his breakout Star Wars stint and the Emmy-nominated prequel series that, let’s be honest, was more nuanced than anybody expected. Deadline dropped the news, but all they’d say was Luna’s in – not who he’s playing, or even which side of the story he’s on. Naturally, the internet has turned this into a game of wild guessing.
'Disney is keeping Luna’s character details locked down tighter than Rapunzel’s tower — at least for now.'
It sounds like the studio is deliberately playing the long game with plot info, probably to fuel speculation (it’s working). Filming kicks off in Spain in June, so don’t expect major reveals any time soon.
The Cast (So Far): Breaking Down Who’s Who
- Teagan Croft: Rapunzel. She’s the main act here — locked away, magical hair, itching to see the world.
- Milo Manheim: Flynn Rider. Disney’s classic lovable thief. He climbs towers, runs from guards, and eventually turns his life around.
- Kathryn Hahn: Mother Gothel. Perfect casting here — nobody delivers sharp, funny, and sinister quite like her.
- Diego Luna: Mystery role. Hero, villain, or maybe something in-between? Place your bets.
Luna definitely adds some gravitas to a cast already stacked with up-and-coming (and seasoned) talent. Given his range — rebels, conflicted heroes, even some straight-up villains — there are a million directions this could go. All we know is that they’re not going small.
What’s Going On Behind the Scenes?
The script is coming from Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor. If those names ring a bell, it’s probably because of Robinson’s knack for edgy, slightly meta storytelling. And on the directing front, Michael Gracey (yep, the guy behind The Greatest Showman) is in charge, which kind of implies they’re chasing something larger-than-life. Creative liberties seem inevitable here, for better or for worse.
The Tangled Legacy and Why This Remake Matters
Just as a reminder: the original animated Tangled was massive — over $600 million global box office, revitalizing the entire Disney princess thing for a new era, and proving that you can have both adventure and actual character development. This new live-action version is clearly aiming to capture that lightning again, just with a batch of new faces (and some new narrative tricks) for a generation already raised on reboots.
Bottom line: bringing in a Star Wars favorite like Diego Luna is a shrewd move. Whether he’s friend or foe, expect more strategic teasing from the House of Mouse as the Spain shoot starts up next month.
