Laura Dern checks into The White Lotus season 4, stepping in after Helena Bonham Carter’s exit, with a new character written in when Bonham Carter and creator Mike White couldn’t align on set.

We’re not even done digesting that White Lotus Sicily finale, but HBO already has cameras rolling on season 4. This time, Mike White and the crew have packed their bags for the fancy coast of southern France. If you ever wondered what sort of messes wealthy people can get into when you combine Cannes, the French Riviera, and White’s dark sense of humor, we’re about to find out.

What’s changing for season 4

The biggest shake-up so far? Helena Bonham Carter was supposed to be one of the main stars for this season — big get, right? Except, just as everyone started to settle in on set, White realized the character he’d written for Carter didn't really fit like he’d hoped. Instead of forcing it, the creative team decided to pivot. Carter is out. That’s a bummer, but nobody seems mad — sometimes, these things just don’t mesh.

Laura Dern is stepping in, but not as a straight swap. White isn’t just giving her Carter’s role with the serial numbers filed off. Instead, he’s throwing out that character and building an entirely new one for Dern. Worth noting: Dern already appeared (voice only!) in a prior season, so she’s not a total newbie to The White Lotus universe.

So, who’s checking in this time?

The show is keeping the now-standard format — new guests, new hotel, same run of craziness. This year, our group of misbehaving vacationers and overworked staff will descend on the Côte d'Azur right when the Cannes Film Festival is in full circus mode. Because of course it’s a bunch of Hollywood-adjacent types, just to give the writers even more rich material.

Here’s the cast list for season 4, and honestly, it’s a pretty robust mix:

  • Vincent Cassel
  • Steve Coogan
  • Caleb Jonte Edwards
  • Dylan Ennis
  • Corentin Fila
  • Ari Graynor
  • Marissa Long
  • Alexander Ludwig
  • Chris Messina
  • AJ Michalka
  • Kumail Nanjiani
  • Nadia Tereszkiewicz
  • Chloe Bennet
  • Sandra Bernhard
  • Heather Graham
  • Max Greenfield
  • Frida Gustavsson
  • Charlie Hall
  • Jarrad Paul
  • Rosie Perez
  • Ben Schnetzer
  • Laura Smet
  • And now, Laura Dern

White Lotus is, once again, sparing no expense: they’ll be filming at the Airelles Château de la Messardière in Saint-Tropez (which is now White Lotus du Cap on the show) and the ultra-luxe Hôtel Martinez, which is branding itself as the in-universe White Lotus Cannes. There will also be some filming in Paris, but, according to HBO, the main story stays glued to the Riviera — so don’t expect a White Lotus: Left Bank spinoff just yet.

What’s this season actually about?

Officially:
'The fourth season will follow a new group of White Lotus hotel guests and employees over the span of a week, taking place during the Cannes Film Festival.'

No spoilers (yet), but we’ve got actors, filmmakers, mysterious staffers, and probably a few dead bodies — it is White Lotus, after all.

Season 4 is written, directed, and created by Mike White, with White, David Bernad, and Mark Kamine all returning as executive producers. Expect more news (and probably more surprises) as production keeps rolling through the summer. For now, cross your fingers Laura Dern’s new character isn’t the one floating in the bay by episode 7.
