Landman: why did Tommy get fired? Cami did it at a party, with the new rig floating past behind them
Landman spent most of its second season setting up a bet that Tommy Norris would not stop arguing against. The sacking, when it lands, takes about ninety seconds and happens somewhere you would not expect.
There's no boardroom, no HR, no warning. Tommy Norris gets moved out of the top job at a drinks reception, in front of the thing he spent the whole season telling his boss not to build.
The scene is in season 2, episode 9, "Plans, Tears, and Sirens", which went out on Paramount+ on 11 January 2026. The setting is a launch party in Louisiana for M-Tex's offshore drilling project. Cami Miller (Demi Moore) and Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton) are talking about the rush of the business when she gets to the point.
"The president of my company can't be averse to the very thing that built it," Cami tells him, and then sacks him.
Tommy stays sat down while she walks off.
The argument that got him there
Cami inherited M-Tex after her husband Monty's death and installed Tommy as president, which was never a comfortable fit — the man's own view of himself is that he belongs in the patch, not behind a desk. The offshore well became the season's fault line. It's a gamble with a stated success rate of around 10%, and Tommy, who has spent a career developing an instinct for what not to drill, said so repeatedly and in public.

Cami's framing at the party is the tell. She's not sacking him for being wrong. She's sacking him because chasing the well is what finally made her understand what Monty loved about the industry, and she's decided that the person running the company can't be the one flinching at it.
The stuff working against him already
- The desk job — Tommy took the presidency without wanting it, and the season kept finding ways to show it.
- The money — M-Tex's balance sheet was under serious strain in the run-up, with a nine-figure hole hanging over episode 8.
- The outside offers — Cami had been fielding approaches from Dan Morell since episode 3, so there was already a version of M-Tex's future that didn't run through Tommy.
- The timing — the same episode ends with Ariana attacked in an alley behind the Patch Cafe and Cooper beating her attacker badly enough to bring the police in, so the sacking isn't even the biggest cliffhanger of the hour.
What happened next
No reinstatement. In the finale, "Tragedy and Flies" (18 January 2026), Tommy doesn't go back to M-Tex — he sets up his own outfit, CTT Oil Exploration & Cattle, lands an investment from Galino, and hires his people out from under his old employer: Cooper, Ariana, Rebecca, Dale, T.L., Nathan, Boss, King and Cheyenne.
Getting sacked by the woman who made him president is, structurally, the most generous thing the show could have done for the character.
Executive producer Christian Wallace has framed the reset as opening up new relationships between the characters, and, more to the point, putting Tommy back in the field rather than the corner office he never liked. Season 3 is on, and Billy Bob Thornton is in it, whatever the churn of fake casting reports said over the winter.
For the record: the rig Cami was celebrating that night is the same one Tommy told her not to sink the money into. The show lets it drift past in the background while she fires him for saying so.
