Kevin Feige Puts All His Energy Into Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars
Marvel’s chief, Kevin Feige, has shifted his full attention to Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, stepping back from other projects to ensure these blockbusters deliver. What’s behind this singular focus?
Kevin Feige, the man at the helm of Marvel Studios, has taken a rather different tack over the past year. Instead of juggling a dizzying array of films and television series, he’s been pouring all his efforts into just two colossal undertakings: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The days of Feige darting between a dozen projects at once appear to be on pause, at least for now.
As Deadline’s Justin Kroll put it during a recent chat on the My Mom’s Basement podcast,
“Feige has been so stretched thin with the TV shows and all these other things, and then maybe doing Star Wars, and all these things. He has been solely focused on this and Secret Wars for, like, a year straight. Like, this has been it.”
Stepping Back From the Marvel Machine
Feige’s decision to narrow his focus comes after years of relentless expansion for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the studio’s slate ballooning to include a steady stream of series and spin-offs, the pressure on its chief architect has been immense. Kroll noted,
“He put Jake Schreier on as the director last year of X-Men. Other than that, he’s kind of let Amy Pascal handle a lot of the Spider-Man stuff,”
referencing the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Feige, it seems, has been content to let trusted collaborators steer some of Marvel’s other high-profile properties, while he concentrates on the next Avengers chapters.
He’s reportedly been spending much of his time in London, a detail that hints at just how hands-on he’s become with these particular productions. Kroll added,
“If that dude has his mind set on just the one thing, like he used to do back in the day with Iron Man or Thor, they turn out good. It’s when he has, like, eight other things, it gets a little tougher.”
High Stakes for Marvel’s Next Phase
While Feige’s attention is fixed on Doomsday and Secret Wars, Marvel’s conveyor belt of content hasn’t ground to a halt. There are still plenty of projects in the pipeline, including Wonder Man and the second series of Daredevil: Born Again. Yet, his involvement in these seems far less direct than in years gone by.
The stakes for Avengers: Doomsday are particularly high. Marvel’s 2025 releases, such as Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, struggled to match the box office heights or cultural buzz of 2019’s Endgame. The Fantastic Four, for instance, failed to cling to the top spot on Disney Plus, quickly losing ground to the comedy sequel Freakier Friday after just a week.
Countdown to Doomsday and Secret Wars
Avengers: Doomsday is set to land in cinemas on 18 December 2026, with Secret Wars following almost exactly a year later, on 17 December 2027. In the meantime, Marvel fans have a host of other Phase 6 titles to look forward to, though it’s clear where the studio’s top brass is placing its bets.
For those keen to keep up with the ever-evolving Marvel universe, there’s no shortage of upcoming films and series to track. But for now, all eyes—especially Feige’s—are on the next two Avengers blockbusters, as the studio looks to recapture the magic of its earlier triumphs.
