John Wick Trilogy Surges on HBO Max, Captivating New Audiences
The original John Wick trilogy is making waves on HBO Max, drawing in fresh viewers and reigniting its reputation as a genre-defining action series. Discover what’s behind its streaming resurgence.
Few action franchises have managed to leave such a lasting mark as the one that burst onto the scene in 2014. The first instalment didn’t just catch audiences off guard—it upended expectations, setting a new standard for the genre and inspiring a wave of imitators. Titles like Atomic Blonde and Extraction owe more than a passing nod to its influence. With each subsequent chapter, the series only gathered momentum, culminating in a fourth entry that proved a box office juggernaut. Yet, it’s the original trio of films that’s currently enjoying a remarkable revival on streaming platforms.
At present, the trilogy is climbing the ranks on HBO Max’s weekly chart. The inaugural film sits comfortably as the second most-watched title this week, just behind Leonardo DiCaprio’s One Battle After Another. Its immediate sequel, Chapter 2, isn’t far behind in third place. Chapter 3 — Parabellum, meanwhile, finds itself in fifth, edged out by Twilight. This renewed interest has brought the franchise back into the spotlight, with both long-time fans and newcomers revisiting the saga’s roots.
Origins and Creative Force
The brainchild of screenwriter Derek Kolstad, the series was first brought to life by directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, both of whom cut their teeth as stunt performers. Leitch would later step aside from directing duties, though he remained involved as an executive producer, leaving Stahelski to steer the ship solo. The central figure, of course, is Keanu Reeves, whose portrayal of the titular character has become iconic. For those unfamiliar, Reeves plays a retired assassin drawn back into a world of violence after a personal tragedy—his dog is killed and his car stolen by a mobster’s son. If ever there was a motive for revenge, that’s it.
"Legendary assassin John Wick (Keanu Reeves) retired from his violent career after marrying the love of his life. Her sudden death leaves John in deep mourning. When sadistic mobster Iosef Tarasov (Alfie Allen) and his thugs steal John's prized car and kill the puppy that was a last gift from his wife, John unleashes the remorseless killing machine within and seeks vengeance. Meanwhile, Iosef's father (Michael Nyqvist) — John's former colleague — puts a huge bounty on John's head."
Critical Acclaim and Box Office Triumphs
It’s no small feat to craft a series where each entry outshines the last. The first film was both a critical darling and a commercial hit, boasting an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and raking in $86 million globally. The numbers only soared from there. By the time the fourth chapter arrived, the franchise had reached new heights, with a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score and a worldwide gross exceeding $447 million. According to IMDb user ratings, the original trilogy stands as the highest-rated action series of its kind.
Spin-offs, however, have struggled to capture the same magic. The Continental, a prequel series on Peacock, left audiences and critics divided, with even some original cast members voicing their disappointment. The Ballerina spin-off, starring Ana de Armas, fared a bit better, pulling in $137 million and a 75% Rotten Tomatoes score, but consensus suggests it fell short of the main saga’s quality.
