John Wick Trilogy Surges on HBO Max, Captivating New Audiences

Few action franchises have managed to leave such a lasting mark as the one that burst onto the scene in 2014. Yet, it’s the original trio of films that’s currently enjoying a remarkable revival on streaming platforms.

At present, the trilogy is climbing the ranks on HBO Max’s weekly chart. The inaugural film sits comfortably as the second most-watched title this week, just behind Leonardo DiCaprio’s One Battle After Another. Its immediate sequel, Chapter 2, isn’t far behind in third place. Chapter 3 — Parabellum, meanwhile, finds itself in fifth, edged out by Twilight. This renewed interest has brought the franchise back into the spotlight, with both long-time fans and newcomers revisiting the saga’s roots.

Origins and Creative Force

The brainchild of screenwriter Derek Kolstad, the series was first brought to life by directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, both of whom cut their teeth as stunt performers. Leitch would later step aside from directing duties, though he remained involved as an executive producer, leaving Stahelski to steer the ship solo. The central figure, of course, is Keanu Reeves, whose portrayal of the titular character has become iconic. For those unfamiliar, Reeves plays a retired assassin drawn back into a world of violence after a personal tragedy—his dog is killed and his car stolen by a mobster’s son. Spin-offs, however, have struggled to capture the same magic. The Continental, a prequel series on Peacock, left audiences and critics divided, with even some original cast members voicing their disappointment. The Ballerina spin-off, starring Ana de Armas, fared a bit better, pulling in $137 million and a 75% Rotten Tomatoes score, but consensus suggests it fell short of the main saga’s quality.
