The grudge is still parked somewhere in the French Quarter. And when Ryan Murphy asked her back, she named her price.

Jessica Lange told a PaleyFest NY audience on Thursday 8 October 2026 that FX had been "too fucking cheap" to pay for cars home from the American Horror Story set. She was there to promote American Horror Story: 13 with Sarah Paulson, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe and Leslie Grossman, and the night was meant to be a reunion. Lange, 77, used it to name the network out loud.

Four in the morning in the French Quarter

The complaint goes back to 2013 and Coven, the third series, which was shot on location in New Orleans. Night shoots ran into the small hours, and nobody laid on transport for the stars:

"We would drive ourselves home at like 4 or 5 in the morning, park on some street in the French Quarter, and find our way home."

— Jessica Lange, at PaleyFest NY

Thirteen years on, she called it "still a bone of contention". Paulson, sitting next to her, reportedly clapped and doubled over laughing rather than add anything on the record. Lange did concede that New Orleans "is a good place to shoot" and that she "had a good time". The grudge survived the good time.

Two Emmys, no lift home

Some context on whose ride FX was saving on. When Ryan Murphy cast her in 2011, Lange already had two Oscars, for Tootsie and Blue Sky. American Horror Story then added:

  • 2012: an Emmy for Constance Langdon in Murder House, the first series.
  • 2014: a second Emmy, this time as lead actress, for Fiona Goode in Coven. Yes, the series she was driving herself home from.
  • 2011–2015: four series as the anthology's anchor, through Asylum and Freak Show, before she announced her exit at PaleyFest in 2015.

FX has since turned that run into 13 series and counting. The awards went on the network's posters; the petrol went on hers.

The star collecting Emmys for the show was the one hunting for a parking space at 5am.

Not everyone took her side. Under the r/entertainment thread, one commenter called it the most out-of-touch take they had ever heard, and another suggested that if driving after a 12-hour shift is that dangerous, the world should start with hospital staff. Fair enough.

The most upvoted comment, though, came from someone who has worked on sets. Driving lead actors to and from location is standard practice, it read: for security, for insurance, and because nobody should get behind the wheel after a 12-hour day. Commenters cited Riverdale star KJ Apa, who crashed after falling asleep driving home from set, and crew members who have died the same way. Another top comment put it more bluntly: "Imagine not offering the two-time Academy Award winning actress who made your franchise possible car service."

The comeback came with terms

She came back anyway. American Horror Story: 13 premiered on 24 September on FX and Hulu, Lange's first proper return since a guest turn as Constance in Apocalypse in 2018. Murphy, by her account, pitched her Constance, his favourite of her characters. She said she would come back only if she could play all four of them: Constance, Sister Jude, Fiona and Elsa Mars. Murphy said yes, and she has since teased a fifth role she refuses to name.

The season finale airs on 29 October. Four characters, one actress, and still no word on whether any of them gets a lift home.
