Jason Statham’s Gritty Cop Thriller ‘Blitz’ Hits Prime Video
Jason Statham’s 2011 crime thriller ‘Blitz’ is now available to stream on Prime Video in the UK and US, offering a raw, intense performance as a detective on the hunt for a cop killer.
Jason Statham has long been a fixture in the world of action cinema, with roles in The Transporter, The Meg, and The Mechanic cementing his status. Yet, among his many performances, there’s one that often slips under the radar. Critics have argued it’s among his finest, and now it’s found a fresh audience on streaming platforms.
First released in 2011, Blitz casts Statham as Detective Sergeant Tom Brant, a no-nonsense officer with little time for bureaucracy and a penchant for bending the rules. The film, directed by Elliott Lester and penned by Nathan Parker, features a strong supporting cast including Paddy Considine, Aidan Gillen, Mark Rylance, Zawe Ashton, Luke Evans, and David Morrissey. Set in South East London, the story follows Brant as he pursues a serial killer targeting police officers. Viewers in the UK and US can now catch Blitz on Prime Video, and it’s also available for free on The Roku Channel.
Critical Reception and Standout Performances
While Blitz has its flaws, it’s the performances of Statham and Considine that make it worth a watch. The film received a mixed response upon release, with Rotten Tomatoes scores reflecting a split between critics (48%) and audiences (36%).
Nevertheless, those who appreciated the film found much to enjoy. Hot Press awarded it a near-perfect 4 out of 5, describing it as
“Smart, sharp, shocking, and at times bloody (and bloodily) hilarious, Blitz's witty script and pacy action elevates its simple premise into a brilliantly gritty tale of moral ambiguity.”
Empire called it
“a rough-cut crime thriller that sees Jason Statham back on familiar turf and doing what he does best.”
The Scotsman noted,
“Ultimately Blitz knows exactly where its strength lies,”
while the Daily Mirror summed up with another 4 out of 5,
“It's gritty, down and dirty, and Statham has never been better.”
Statham’s Upcoming Projects
Looking ahead, 2026 is shaping up to be a significant year for Statham, with the actor set to headline several new thrillers. First on the slate is Shelter, directed by Ric Roman Waugh, which is scheduled for release on 30 January 2026. The official synopsis reads:
“On a remote coastal island, a reclusive man (Jason Statham) rescues a young girl (Bodhi Rae Breathnach) from a deadly storm, drawing them both into danger. Forced out of isolation, he must confront his turbulent past while protecting her, sending them on a tense journey of survival and redemption.”
In addition to Shelter, Statham will star in Mutiny, directed by Jean-François Richet and set for release on 21 August 2026. He’s also teaming up with Timo Tjahjanto for The Beekeeper 2, which has been picked up by Amazon MGM Studios for distribution.
