James Gunn insists that Batman’s iconic costume is secondary to the story and casting, despite persistent calls from fans for a blue-and-grey suit with white eyes.

Ever since James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, revealed plans for a fresh interpretation of the Dark Knight in The Brave and the Bold, a chorus of fans has been clamouring for a return to the hero’s more traditional comic book attire. The wish list is familiar: a blue and grey ensemble, a yellow oval encircling the bat emblem, and those unmistakable white lenses. Yet, Gunn has made it clear that, for him, these visual details are not the heart of the matter.

Responding to a fan’s query about the possibility of white eyes on the cowl, Gunn replied,

The most requested thing would be the blue and grey. Then the yellow around the bat. And THEN the white eyes. But all of those things I find less important than the character himself, the writing, and the person who plays him.

His stance echoes previous remarks, where he’s expressed a certain bemusement at the intensity of debate over Batman’s wardrobe.

There’s a religious aspect to some of this stuff that’s very uncomfortable. Should Batman have white eyes? That’s a big subject of conversation. It’s like, 'Guys, that’s really what matters?' But those are the things they care about. Should his utility belt be yellow? Should he have the yellow crest around the bat? All of that sort of stuff. None of those things are what’s most important to me. What matters is the character, the story.

Fans’ Hopes for a Classic Look

For years, the cinematic version of Gotham’s protector has leaned towards a more tactical, all-black appearance, a far cry from the colourful costumes of the comics. Many viewers are now hoping for a change, longing for a design that pays homage to the Caped Crusader’s roots. The blue-and-grey suit, complete with a yellow utility belt and white eyes, has become something of a rallying cry among enthusiasts, who see it as a chance to bring a bit of comic book flair back to the big screen.

Despite this, Gunn remains steadfast. He’s not dismissing the fans’ passion, but he’s prioritising the substance of the story and the depth of the character over the specifics of the costume. For him, the essence of Batman lies in the narrative and the actor’s portrayal, not in the colour of his cape or the shape of his mask.

What’s Next for The Brave and the Bold?

The upcoming film, The Brave and the Bold, is set to introduce not only Batman but also Robin and, possibly, other members of the extended bat-family. Andy Muschetti, who previously directed The Flash in 2023, will be at the helm. While The Flash received a mixed reception, the return of Michael Keaton’s Batman was one of its more warmly received elements. Muschetti’s background with the IT films and the Welcome to Derry project suggests he may bring a suitably atmospheric touch to Gotham’s world.

As for who will don the cowl in this new chapter, that remains a mystery. It has been confirmed, however, that Robert Pattinson’s version of the character will continue in a separate continuity, with The Batman Part 2 scheduled for 2027. For now, fans will have to wait and see whether their sartorial wishes for the Dark Knight will be granted, or if Gunn’s focus on story and character will take precedence.

Looking Ahead in the DC Universe

With so much speculation swirling around the future of Gotham’s guardian, audiences are keeping a close eye on every announcement. The debate over Batman’s appearance is unlikely to fade any time soon, but Gunn’s approach suggests that, at least for now, the story will come first. Those eager to stay informed about the evolving DC Universe can look forward to a packed slate of upcoming films and series, each promising its own take on these much-loved characters.
