James Gunn Breaks Silence on Teen Titans Movie as Director Rumors Swirl

Let’s be honest—DC Studios has a knack for keeping fans in the dark about half their upcoming slate. We’ve got Supergirl and Clayface taking centre stage for the DCU this year, but if you’re hoping for a proper update on that long-rumoured Teen Titans film, you might want to manage your expectations—at least for now.

Teen Titans: On a Slow Burner

Even with a screenwriter attached as of 2024, Teen Titans seems to be lurking at the very back of DC’s development dungeon. It’s not technically dead, but it’s not exactly sprinting either. Here’s where things stand:

• Script status: Not finished. James Gunn himself said as much last summer (2023), explaining the project was still waiting on a full draft. Since then, not much has changed—at least publicly.
• Screenwriter shuffle: The writer previously attached, Ana Nogueira (the same person penning Supergirl), apparently left Titans behind to crack on with the Wonder Woman reboot script.
• Is there a director? Nope, not even close. Over on Threads, Gunn shot down a rumour that Sam Levinson (yes, the Euphoria bloke) was being courted for the job. His exact words: 'We aren't talking to directors for Teen Titans quite yet.' In other words, it's not time for anyone to start picking out directors chairs.
• Official announcement: For what it’s worth, the Teen Titans movie wasn’t even included in DC Studios’ much-hyped ‘Gods and Monsters’ slate that kicked off all this DCU reboot noise early in 2023. Make of that what you will.

So, Is It Happening?

Here’s the strange thing: despite the slow crawl and radio silence, Gunn hasn’t said the project is dead, which—by DC standards—counts as a glimmer of hope. He’s made it clear they’re not at the point of hiring directors or making grand announcements, but he’s not pretending it doesn’t exist either.

No word on what shape the script is actually in, who might be cast, or even which version of the Titans they’re thinking of using—old school Robin, or the newer gang. At this point, all we really know is the film’s still on DC’s whiteboard somewhere, even if it’s buried beneath a pile of other sticky notes.
