Amazon MGM Studios chief Mike Hopkins says James Bond 26 is moving forward, with a clear mission to keep 007 relevant.

Big changes are afoot for James Bond, and they're not messing about. With Amazon finally grabbing full creative control of the iconic spy franchise in February 2025—after picking up Bond’s steely parent company, MGM, back in 2022—the entire 007 operation is now headed for a pretty dramatic overhaul. Basically, Amazon MGM Studios wants a new Bond for a new world, and they’re pulling in some serious industry clout to make it happen.

Bond's Shaken Up Management

Leading the charge behind the scenes, we’ve got Amy Pascal (yeah, that Amy Pascal) and David Heyman (who only produced a little thing called Harry Potter) sitting in the main producer seats. Then there’s Denis Villeneuve, officially attached to direct the next film. He’s the bloke behind Arrival and the recent Dune films, so expect slightly less Martini, slightly more existential dread. The script is coming from Steven Knight, whose credits range from Peaky Blinders to Eastern Promises and who’s rumoured to be taking Bond into darker, more ‘real-world’ territory for film number 26.

Who Wants To Be 007?

As for the man himself, Daniel Craig’s successor is still a giant mystery. Auditions officially kicked off this May, with Nina Gold—yes, the Nina Gold who cast Game of Thrones—heading up the hunt. The brief is pretty clear: they're after a new face, somewhere in their 30s, and up for a long haul. The new Bond could well be signing on for a whole decade's worth of spycraft. While there’s supposedly a front-runner, the studio is holding back on any big reveals for now.

  • Producers: Amy Pascal and David Heyman
  • Director: Denis Villeneuve
  • Screenwriter: Steven Knight
  • Casting Director: Nina Gold
  • Bond Actor: TBA—someone in their 30s, with commitment issues (as in, they're going to be stuck in MI6 for years)

Bigger Picture: New Direction, Same Cinema Release

Amazon’s big boss, Mike Hopkins, offered the first real update since this whole casting circus began. Speaking on Variety’s Strictly Business podcast, he made it clear: the team’s barely even started. ‘We’re sort of in the bottom half of the first inning of bringing this to life,’ he admitted—yes, he used a baseball analogy, but we’ll let him off, he’s probably forced to. The top priority, according to Hopkins, was hiring ‘the best people in the world’ (not exactly an amateur lot, to be fair) and then figuring out how Bond actually fits into the world as it is now. So far, no one’s pretending this will be a half-hearted retread.

"The first step was, 'Let's hire the best people in the world to bring this new story to life, this new chapter in the Bond franchise. So, between Denis and Amy, David Heyman and Steven Knight writing the script, we feel like we've got a world-class storytelling team there working with us. The second thing is, we are gonna try and figure out how does James Bond get into the next chapter and then be relevant for customers for a long period of time. And so, there was still a lot of work to do. We're sort of in the bottom half of the first inning of bringing this to life."

Now, what about streaming, you ask? Amazon’s business is obviously built around Prime Video, but Hopkins made a point of shutting down the idea that Bond might skip cinemas. ‘We’ve made a big investment in theatrical. I would be shocked if that were any different with James Bond in the future.’ In short: Bond’s still got his licence to appear on the big screen—at least for the foreseeable.

When Might Bond Actually Be Back?

With all this ambition flying around, they're still nowhere near rolling cameras. Amazon’s taking their time to get this right, so production on Bond 26 isn’t due to begin until 2026 at the absolute earliest. Unless Denis Villeneuve somehow clones himself, things will wait until he finishes making Dune: Messiah (set to hit cinemas December this year), as he needs to wrap both filming and a mountain of press for that before he can put on his tux again for Bond.

The upshot: don’t expect to see Bond 26 hitting screens before 2028 or 2029. No official release date yet, and yes, that’s a bit of a wait, but considering all the egos and reset buttons involved, it’s frankly a miracle they’ve even agreed on a director.
