Jack Black Teases the Lava-Hot Minecraft–Super Mario Crossover You Didn’t Know You Needed
Jack Black wants to smash the Super Mario Galaxy Movie into A Minecraft Movie, pitching a fiery crossover as he readies his turn as Bowser alongside Chris Pratt, Benny Safdie, Glen Powell, and Anya Taylor-Joy ahead of the film’s theatrical release.
Jack Black is out here living the dream—or at least pitching some wild ones. If you thought a Super Mario and Minecraft team-up sounded like fan fiction, apparently Jack has considered it out loud, and honestly, I wouldn’t put it past Hollywood to try it.
Jack Black Wants Lava Chickens and Crossover Chaos
During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Black was deep in Bowser mode (he’s voicing the fire-breathing villain in the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie, in case you needed a reminder). He got hit with what felt like a pretty standard 'if you had Bowser’s powers' question. Instead of going generic, he went full Jack Black:
So yeah, Bowser grills chickens with his fire breath, Minecraft comes in with its iconic poultry, and suddenly we’ve got the kind of fever dream crossover you only get when an interviewer has some time to kill.
Wait, There’s More: The Minecraft Movie
If you somehow missed it, Black was also in on A Minecraft Movie, which basically took over the global box office last year. For those who like their numbers big:
- Opened at $162 million in its first weekend (domestic)
- Pulls in about $424 million total in the U.S.
- Internationally, it cleared $537 million
- If you like adding things up, that’s $961 million worldwide
It also featured Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, and a cast that left theaters full and box office counters very busy.
Mario Galaxy: Coming Soon, With a Stacked Cast
Black is not slowing down—his turn as Bowser in Super Mario Galaxy Movie drops April 1 (not a joke, apparently). He’s joined by Chris Pratt, Benny Safdie, Glen Powell, Anya Taylor-Joy, and honestly, at this point, you could tell me 'everyone with a SAG card' and I’d believe it.
Jack Black Eyes Even More Video Game Adaptations
If you were worried Black would stop at just two massive game franchises, he’s already looking at what’s next. He told Screenrant he’d love to jump into a Yakuza adaptation (‘I’m going to throw my hat in that ring. I don’t know if there are any parts for me, like a portly American, but talk to me. Sega, give me a jingle.’). In other words: the man sees no limits and I can respect that.
Studio crossovers, Minecraft chickens scorched by a cartoon turtle, and a movie cast list that’s nearly as long as Bowser’s list of Mario gripes—can’t say Hollywood is running out of ideas, but they’re certainly getting stranger.
