Netflix just dropped Anaconda, the 2025 meta-reboot starring Jack Black and Jennifer Lopez — a sly, self-aware twist on the 1997 jungle horror and one of the year’s most underrated comedies.

So if you’re the type who thinks we’ve hit Peak Reboot and the snake-filled nostalgia barrel is officially empty—surprise! Netflix just dropped a wild new movie that mashes up comedy, meta-movie humor, and yes, one very big snake. If you somehow missed this one in theaters (totally understandable, since the whole 'reboot of Anaconda' idea flew under the radar), here’s the gist.

Yep, That's Really Jack Black and Jennifer Lopez Together Again (Kind Of)

The film in question: Anaconda. Not the original 1997 anaconda-munching-people-in-the-jungle adventure, but a full-on meta reboot—think 'movie about people trying to make an Anaconda movie.' This time, Jack Black and Jennifer Lopez share the screen, but that’s just the start. The cast is honestly stacked: alongside Black and Lopez, you’ve got Paul Rudd, Steve Zahn, Thandiwe Newton, Daniela Melchior, Selton Mello, Ice Cube (yep, back for another round of snake-wrangling), Ione Skye, Ben Lawson, and a few others who clearly wanted in on the Amazonian chaos.

The Plot: Remake Dream Becomes Anaconda Nightmare

Here’s what’s going on: Doug and Griff, lifelong buddies and self-proclaimed connoisseurs of “so-bad-it’s-good” cinema, finally decide it’s time to remake their childhood favorite (which, in their world, is 1997’s 'Anaconda'). They dive headfirst into the Amazon to shoot their low-rent dream project. But—shocker—the fake horror turns into very real horror when a genuine monster snake shows up, hijacking their goofy production and turning it into a full-on survival scramble.

The best line from the synopsis pretty much sums it up:

'The movie they’re dying to make? It might just get them killed.'

No false promises here—expect chaos, comedy, and people screaming both from fear and from realizing they’re way out of their depth.

Crew Behind the Snake

Tom Gormican (who’s behind 'The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent'—Nicholas Cage fans know) directs, and he also co-wrote the script with Kevin Etten. The pair riff on the whole horror remake obsession, while nodding to the series’ B-movie roots. The movie’s grounded in the original material by Hans Bauer, Jim Cash, and Jack Epps Jr., aka the folks who launched the whole killer-snake franchise back in the late ’90s. Production-wise, you’ll see Brad Fuller, Andrew Form, Kevin Etten, and Gormican’s names in the credits, with Samson Muecke as executive producer to keep the reptilian mayhem on track.

Anaconda: A Franchise with More Sequels Than You Remember

Quick reminder: the first 'Anaconda' (1997) was one of those 'let’s put J.Lo and Ice Cube in the jungle with a CGI snake' movies, and somehow it worked. It led to a string of sequels:

  • 'Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid' (2004)
  • 'Anaconda 3: Offspring' (2008)
  • 'Anacondas: Trail of Blood' (2009)
  • And, just when you thought it couldn’t get weirder, the 2015 crossover 'Lake Placid vs. Anaconda'

If you lost track after the first movie, you’re probably not alone.

Should You Hit Play?

Look, if you want something self-aware, packed with absurdity, and featuring more stars than you’d expect for a movie about a movie about a giant snake—this is probably right up your alley. Whether you’re into meta-comedy, monster movies, or just like to see Jennifer Lopez running from digital reptiles again, it’s streaming now.

And after this, I fully expect the Hollywood nostalgia machine to start eyeing 'Lake Placid vs. Sharknado'—give it a year.
