The curse is back on the prowl: They Follow, the sequel to horror breakout It Follows, just supercharged its cast, reuniting writer-director David Robert Mitchell with Maika Monroe and packing in new blood ahead of production.

If you remember the eerie paranoia of It Follows, you might want to brace yourself, because the long-promised sequel is finally picking up steam—and more cast members than you can shake a stick at. The new chapter, logically titled They Follow, is starting to look like a horror ensemble for the ages, with a fresh round of casting that’s got genre fans properly buzzing.

Ten New Faces—and Any of Them Could Be the Demon

The big reveal is that ten actors have just signed on, but don’t bother digging for spoilers because the filmmakers are keeping character details strictly under wraps. Given how the original supernatural curse works, that means literally any one of them could end up as the next terrifying entity. Here’s who’s joining the fun:

  • Jackie Earle Haley
  • Justine Lupe
  • Anna Mirodin
  • Jayne Taini
  • Michael Gandolfini
  • Tom Pecinka
  • Melora Walters
  • Ben Krieger
  • Natalie Shinnick
  • Jan Hoag

It’s a proper mixed bag of veterans and new talent. Haley, in particular, is always great at playing someone with something unsettling about them, so if he ends up as the shape-shifting monster at any point, I’ll be quietly surprised if he hasn’t worked out an even creepier walk than last time.

Back for More Trauma: Maika Monroe Returns, Naomi Ackie Joins

Maika Monroe is reprising her role as Jay, which makes sense—her haunted energy was a big part of why the first film worked. Naomi Ackie is also officially linked, getting a lead role after a fair chunk of quiet speculation.

You’re not getting any real plot crumbs yet, besides the fact that the sequel is set a decade after the original film. So expect some new rules or at least some harder-won scepticism about what goes bump in the night.

Mitchell Still at the Helm

David Robert Mitchell’s directing and writing again, so there’s proper continuity of panic. He’s also producing the film, backed by a long list of names for those who like following producer trivia: Jake Weiner, Chris Bender, Erik Rommesmo, Mike D'Alto, Randal Sandler, Scott Aharoni, Sinan Eczacibasi, David Kaplan, Rebecca Green, and Laura Smith.

Flashback: Why Does It Follows Have Such a Cult Following?

If you’ve managed to miss the first film (which would be impressive at this point), It Follows dropped in 2015 after a Cannes 2014 debut and developed a passionate following thanks to its genuinely unsettling premise—a young woman haunted by an unstoppable, shape-shifting entity passed on through sex. The monster’s whole gimmick was appearing as anyone, anywhere, forcing the characters into a sort of never‐ending anxiety spiral where no passerby could be trusted. Mitchell’s minimalistic touch and the relentless sense of dread made it something of a modern classic.

'The identities of their characters remain undisclosed, leaving open the possibility that any one of them could become the monster.'
