Is Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua’s Hannibal epic over before it begins?

If you thought Denzel Washington charging round as Hannibal, the legendary Carthaginian general, was actually happening soon – well, don’t hold your breath. This one’s had all the fanfare and none of the follow-through, and the latest word is pretty bleak.

Big Names, Big Budget, Big Problems

Let’s rewind. Netflix trumpeted this epic historical drama, reuniting Washington with his long-term partner in action, Antoine Fuqua. If you’ve seen 'The Equalizer' films, 'The Magnificent Seven', or 'Training Day', you know the pair have a habit of delivering gritty, tense stuff. They’d lined up John Logan, the bloke behind 'Gladiator', to write the screenplay, so there was at least a chance we’d get some properly muscular dialogue about elephants and Roman carnage.

On top of that, Fuqua and Washington were producing, along with Erik Olsen and Adam Goldworm. Jeremy Lott and Frank Moll had signed on to exec produce. Not exactly a rinky-dink operation, this lot.

Too Much Money, Not Enough Movie

And still, it ran aground. When the money men at Netflix took a closer look at the numbers, the projected budget was heading north of $200 million. Which is an eye-watering sum, even for a streamer known for hurling cash at the wall to see what sticks. Apparently, things got far enough that they’d started casting for Denzel’s co-stars and location scouts had already been sniffing round Italy. In other words: not just a bunch of emails and handshakes – this thing was actually moving.

But as the price-tag shot up, Netflix pulled the handbrake. Both the studio and producers agreed it was better to pause instead of careening straight into a financial brick wall. Since then, insiders have been trying to resuscitate it, but it’s not looking good.

One of the more reputable sources, cinematographer Robert Richardson, actually used the phrase:

"effectively dead."

Which pretty much kills any hope that they'll magic the thing back to life.

Curious Development Hell Details

• Washington has wanted to play Hannibal for over two decades, but originally held off because he didn’t want to be away from family that long. (Not that anyone’s blaming him.)
• Now that his kids are grown – his son John David Washington’s making his own Hollywood name – Denzel was actually ready to go for it.
• This wasn’t the only 'Hannibal' project floating around: Vin Diesel’s been banging on about his own Hannibal film for years, but his version has constantly run into ‘logistical problems’. Apparently that’s code for: never going to happen.
• The version Netflix had in the works was set to cover the major battles Hannibal led against Rome in the Second Punic War, with Fuqua’s Hill District Media involved as part of a first-look deal with Netflix.

So, a Denzel Washington-led, John Logan-scripted, Antoine Fuqua-directed Hannibal epic might’ve sounded grand, but right now it’s filed under ‘Nice idea, shame about the bank balance’.
