IMDb just made Jason Statham his own genre for Mutiny’s release

Jason Statham punching blokes on a boat—that’s what you’re signing up for with Mutiny. Like, let’s not pretend the title is burying the lede. Lionsgate has just launched this one, and it’s not exactly shy about what it’s offering. Statham teams back up with Jean-François Richet, who did Plane, and you’ve also got Annabelle Wallis, Roland Møller, and Adrian Lester along for the ride. The plot’s classic Statham: he plays Cole Reed, a bloke who watches his billionaire boss get murdered, gets framed, then does what any self-respecting action hero would—storms a cargo ship solo to sort it out. Naturally, there’s some big conspiracy lurking under the surface.

It’s honestly about time. When Mutiny dropped, IMDb itself went and created a new sub-genre: ‘Jason Statham Action’. No, really. You go on there, and there’s now a little button that rounds up 34 of his most, well, Stathamy films. The studio’s even taking the mick out of it—Lionsgate’s Instagram has been shouting about their man becoming a genre unto himself. Not sure if it’s more weird or deserved, but either way, now if you tell someone it’s a ‘Jason Statham film’, that’s an actual category they can search. Fair play, he’s put in the work.

Reaction? Exactly What You Expect

The promo posters aren’t shy about it: they’re straight-up referencing Die Hard, but waterlogged, and with more cockney banter. No one’s expecting high art here, but if you want Statham kicking heads on a freighter, apparently it delivers. Hunter Bolding from That Hollywood Show summed it up on Twitter like this:

'Mutiny is Statham at his best. He superplexes the bad guy off a gangway on the boat. Statham is his own genre of action and it continues with a most satisfying movie. Daddy is home and the human traffickers are TOAST.'

So if you’re keeping score: yes, he’s still tossing bad guys overboard, yes he’s being 100% Statham, and yes, according to critics, Mutiny does exactly what it says on the tin.

Apparently, his next project with director David Leitch (the one behind The Fall Guy and Bullet Train) is called Jason Statham Stole My Bike. They’re not saying much about the plot, but word has it he’ll play... Jason Statham. Yes, he’s crossing into full meta territory, starring as a global action superstar version of himself—very 'Nicolas Cage in Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent', but with more headbutts and fewer wigs. Details are under wraps, but it’s supposed to be a self-referential blast.
