How many seasons will House of the Dragon run? Condal has named the endpoint — and Martin's blueprint wanted more hours
How many seasons of House of the Dragon will there be? What HBO has confirmed, what the showrunner has planned, and where George R.R. Martin's original vision fits into the endgame.
The Dance of the Dragons has an expiry date. Not everyone involved is thrilled about the maths.
Short answer: four. House of the Dragon ends with season four, full stop, dracarys. Showrunner Ryan Condal first said it at a press conference back in 2024, HBO content boss Casey Bloys has since confirmed the four-season plan, and Condal has kept repeating it every time someone hands him a microphone.
"Yes, that is very much my plan," Condal said of wrapping the story with season four.
Season three landed on HBO in June 2026; season four — the finale — is expected in 2028. Which sounds tidy. It is not entirely tidy.
The Martin-shaped asterisk
Here's the fun part. George R.R. Martin — co-creator, author of Fire & Blood, keeper of the source material and of grudges — laid out his own blueprint years ago, and it involved more hours than the show is getting:
"It is going to take four full seasons of 10 episodes each," Martin wrote in 2022, to do the Dance of the Dragons justice from start to finish.
Four seasons of ten. What the show has actually delivered: ten episodes in season one, then eight, then eight again, with season four's count reportedly landing at eight as well. If you're counting on your fingers, that's a Targaryen civil war losing roughly a season's worth of screen time against the author's own arithmetic.

And how are the co-creators getting on?
Reader, they are not. Martin has described his relationship with Condal in later seasons as "abysmal", and reporting has him stepping back from the show altogether after clashing over season three's direction. He's off adapting A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms instead, and Warner Bros. is developing an Aegon's Conquest film besides — so Westeros isn't closing, just this particular wing of it.
The bottom line for anyone planning their viewing:
- Seasons: four, and that's final.
- Where we are: season three aired in 2026; one season to go.
- When it ends: 2028, barring dragons, strikes or acts of god.
