Here's the maths for anyone frantically Googling between episodes: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will run for five seasons, full stop. Season 4 is streaming now, season 5 has already been filmed, and — brace — the final season is just six episodes long. Forty-six episodes total, and then the Enterprise gets handed over to a certain James Tiberius Kirk like a company car.
Why only six? Blame the merger, thank the negotiation
The abbreviated ending wasn't the creative team's dream scenario. Amid Paramount's financial chaos and the Skydance merger, the studio initially wanted the show to end after season 4 — at one point offering a two-hour movie as a consolation wrap-up. Showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers argued the series had promised fans a proper bridge into The Original Series and needed actual episodes to build it. Goldsman's account of the negotiation, via ScreenRant, is almost comically brisk:
"We said six, and they said six."

What the final six will actually be
Goldsman has been unusually specific about the shape of the thing. Speaking at the season 4 junket, again to ScreenRant, he described the last run as a tonally unified suite rather than the show's usual genre buffet:
"It is a six-episode goodbye."
Translation: fewer musical episodes and body-swap larks, more delivering every character to the future canon has already written for them — with Pike's five-year mission closing and Paul Wesley's Kirk taking the captain's chair. The season wrapped filming in December 2025; realistically, don't expect it before 2027.
