How many seasons of Dead City will there be? The answer changed this summer

The tidy answer: three seasons of The Walking Dead: Dead City exist — 2023, 2025, and the current run, which premiered on 26 July and wraps on 13 September. The untidy answer, the one about whether there'll be a fourth, got considerably more interesting over the past few weeks.

What happened this summer

Going into July, the assumption was simple: AMC would announce season four at San Diego Comic-Con, as is franchise tradition — Dead City's own season three was greenlit in a summer, and Daryl Dixon got its renewal at SDCC the year before. Instead, the Dead City panel came and went on 24 July with no renewal announcement whatsoever. The same weekend delivered the other shoe: Daryl Dixon's final season slid to 2027, meaning the Walking Dead universe currently has precisely zero shows confirmed beyond what's airing now — which would snap a run of continuous TWD television going back to 2010.

So the maths changed. Dead City went from "obviously getting season four" to "the entire franchise's future, actually".

The case for season four

It's stronger than the silence suggests:

• Season three is the best-reviewed run the show has ever had — a dramatic leap from season two's mixed reception, even if AMC's linear ratings remain soft.
• Nobody has called this the final season, which AMC pointedly did do for Daryl Dixon.
• The people making it are already plotting.

That last one comes straight from Maggie herself. Lauren Cohan confirmed in August that the creative team has been sketching what comes next:

"We have a lot of ideas that are outside the box for another season"

So, the number

Three seasons for now, with a fourth unconfirmed but very much alive in the writers' heads — and with the not-small pressure of being the last Walking Dead show standing working in its favour. Ask again after the 13 September finale; if AMC is saving the announcement for a cliffhanger, that's when the other zombie drops.
