How does Daeron die in House of the Dragon? The book can't even agree on it
Daeron Targaryen finally stepped out of the shadows in House of the Dragon season 3, after two full seasons as the Green family's mystery fourth child. Alicent's youngest son (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) is still very much alive on screen — so his death is a book question, and it's one of the strangest deaths in Fire & Blood, because George R.R. Martin gives you three different versions of it.
The short answer
In the 2018 book Fire & Blood, Daeron dies at the Second Battle of Tumbleton in 130 AC, aged 16, when Addam Velaryon launches a surprise attack on the sleeping Hightower camp. Daeron's tent is set ablaze — and from there, the book's fictional historian offers three conflicting accounts of how he actually died.
The three versions of Daeron's death
Fire & Blood is written as a history compiled from unreliable sources, and Daeron's end is a prime example. Take your pick:
- Killed by Black Trombo — a Myrish sellsword who, by his own frequently repeated boast, smashed the prince's head in with a morningstar.
- Speared by a nobody — an unknown man-at-arms cut Daeron down as he stumbled out of his burning tent, not even realising who he'd killed.
- Burned alive — the simplest version: Daeron never made it out, and died in the flames of his own pavilion.
The body was burned beyond recognition, which caused problems of its own — pretenders claiming to be Daeron surfaced years later, during the reign of Aegon III.
What happens to his dragon
Tessarion, the Blue Queen, outlives her rider by hours. She battles Addam Velaryon's Seasmoke in the skies above Tumbleton — both dragons are mortally wounded. Tessarion crashes to earth and lies dying until Benjicot Blackwood, unable to watch her suffer, orders his archer Billy Burley to end it with three arrows to the eye.
Where the show is up to
As of season 3, episode 4 (July 2026), Daeron is alive and in a grim spot: Ormund Hightower handed Daemon a decoy — a fake Daeron with dyed hair, played by Charlie Gordon — while keeping the real prince with his army as a weapon against Rhaenyra. Ormund's piety doesn't extend to kindness. As he tells the boy in episode 4:
"I have raised you in the light of the Seven."
The show has already changed plenty around Daeron, so his death could easily land differently on screen — if it comes at all before the series ends.
For the record: the boy his brothers barely knew got the kindest epitaph of the three. History remembers him as Daeron the Daring — the only one of Alicent's sons anyone had a good word for.
