How are Taskmaster contestants chosen? Alex Horne spent years begging one comedian to say yes
Every series of Taskmaster delivers five comedians nobody quite expected to see together — and that's not an accident. There is no application form, no audition tape, no public casting call. Here's how the line-ups actually come together, and the story of the one booking that took fourteen series to land.
How the line-ups are put together
Contestants are invited by creator Alex Horne and the production team at Avalon, with a handful of unofficial rules guiding every series:
- Unpredictability is the point — Horne has said his goal is that nobody can ever guess a line-up in advance, mixing stand-ups, actors, and comedy writers from different worlds.
- Nice people only — Horne told The Chris Moyles Show the programme runs on one real rule: everyone booked has to be pleasant, because it's a long, team-based shoot and one out-of-control ego can wreck it.
- One shot each — contestants appear in a single series only (barring Champion of Champions), so every booking counts.
- Diaries decide a lot — Greg Davies admitted in a 2020 Channel 4 interview that some dream names simply can't make the filming dates work.
That first rule was hard-won: back in 2015, casting series 1 was a struggle until Frank Skinner said yes, giving the odd little format a seal of approval that persuaded everyone else.
The comedian who took 14 series to convince
Frankie Boyle. When the famously spiky Scot finally appeared on series 15 in 2023, Horne admitted in a British Comedy Guide interview that Boyle needed a very long courtship:
"He had to wait 14 series to really be sure" the show would look after him, Horne said in 2023 — roughly eight years of asking.
What got him over the line in the end? Partly trust, and partly the fact that his children are big fans.
Does begging ever work the other way?
Constantly. Richard Herring spent years publicly asking to be on before landing series 10. Jason Mantzoukas emailed Horne directly asking to take part — and his severe egg allergy then had to be factored into every task. Ed Gamble went one better: contestant on series 9, then host of the official podcast.
Who's still on the wish list?
Horne revealed in 2024 that Bill Bailey sits at the top of it, with an open invitation, and that Stephen Merchant has been talked to repeatedly. And in 2026 he teased something bigger to RadioTimes: a future series will feature an Oscar winner.
Fourteen series of patience worked on Frankie Boyle. Whoever's next on the list should probably just say yes now.
