House of the Dragon Season 3 Opens With All-Out War, Star Teases Mayhem Ahead
House of the Dragon isn’t easing into Season 3—it’s charging straight into a massive opener, with Steve Toussaint, aka Lord Corlys Velaryon, teasing pure mayhem from the jump.
If you thought House of the Dragon was intense before, you haven’t seen anything yet. HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel is gearing up for its third season, and from the sounds of it, the opening episode will be an absolute bloodbath. Honestly, they’re not messing about this time – and we’ve got a solid tease from one of the show’s main players.
Battle by Sea (and by Budget)
Steve Toussaint – that’s Lord Corlys Velaryon to us – let slip at SXSW London (cheers, Deadline, for catching this) that Season 3 is going big, right from the word go. If you’re a fan of the source material, you’ll probably already know which iconic sea battle he’s talking about, and by all accounts, the anticipation’s been through the roof.
Here’s how Toussaint described it:
"People who know the story have been excited and waiting for this particular sea battle... Luckily for me, my character and his son [Alyn of Hull, played by Abubakar Salim], are central to that."
He went on to mention he had no idea how much cash HBO threw at this sequence, but apparently, 'it was a lot.' Three full-size ships, two enormous tanks (one wet, one dry), entire water cannon setups – you get the picture. There’s liberal use of blood, head-lopping, seaborne chaos, and, according to Toussaint, total mayhem. HBO’s obviously decided they’re winning the arms race for elaborate medieval violence.
What Else to Expect: Dragons and Drama (and More Dragons)
The latest trailer pretty much confirms it: things are getting even nastier. More dragon combat, higher stakes all around, and if you felt Season 2 was violent, brace yourself.
Quick Refresher: Where We Are
- Series pedigree: House of the Dragon is the official prequel to Game of Thrones, adapted from George R. R. Martin’s work and helmed by Martin himself with Ryan Condal.
- Timeline so far: First aired in 2022. Season 2 dropped two years after. HBO locked in Season 3 as of June 2024.
- Cast highlights: You know Toussaint and Salim, but the show’s packed with big names: Rhys Ifans, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Sonoya Mizuno, Harry Collett, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, Matthew Needham, James Norton, Tom Bennett, Kieran Bew, Kurt Egyiawan, Freddie Fox, Clinton Liberty, Gayle Rankin, Tom Cullen, Tommy Flanagan, Dan Fogler, Joplin Sibtain, Barry Sloane, and more. Genuinely a who’s who of British (and not-so-British) acting talent.
When’s It Out?
HBO Max and HBO have pencilled in June 21, 2026, as the premiere date for House of the Dragon Season 3. New episodes land every week, leading up to the big finale on August 9, 2026.
