House of the Dragon: Green vs Black — who wins the Dance of the Dragons
House of the Dragon is right in the thick of it: season 3 began on 21 June 2026 with the Battle of the Gullet and runs weekly on HBO until 9 August. But if you can't wait to learn how the Targaryen civil war shakes out, George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood — the 2018 history book the show adapts — already holds the answer.
Fair warning: it's a spoiler, and it's not a happy one for either side.
What the book says happens
Rhaenyra's Blacks take King's Landing, and she rules from the Iron Throne for about half a year — until taxes, executions, and the Storming of the Dragonpit turn the city against her.
She flees, and on Dragonstone she's captured by Aegon II, who feeds her to his dragon Sunfyre in front of her own son.
The Greens' triumph doesn't last either. Barely six months later Aegon II — crippled, broken, and refusing every offer of peace — is poisoned by his own councillors before the Blacks' armies can reach the capital and do something worse.
So who actually wins?
On paper: the Blacks. The crown passes to Rhaenyra's son, who is crowned Aegon III and marries Aegon II's daughter Jaehaera to stitch the factions back together. Every Targaryen monarch afterwards — all the way down to Daenerys — descends from Rhaenyra. She lost the war and won the bloodline.
In every other sense: nobody.
- The family — Daemon and Aemond kill each other above the Gods Eye; Helaena takes her own life; Alicent outlives all four of her children and dies a prisoner in 133 AC.
- The dragons — the Dance all but wipes them out; the few survivors dwindle, and the last dragon dies within a generation, in 153 AC.
- The realm — the Riverlands burned, the treasury emptied, and a brutal winter waiting on the far side of the war.
- The throne — inherited by a traumatised boy king remembered as Aegon the Broken.
"The idea that we control the dragons is an illusion," King Viserys warns in the show's very first episode (2022).
By the end of the Dance, that line reads like the entire war's epitaph.
Where the show is now
Season 3 — eight episodes, 21 June to 9 August 2026 — covers the war's bloodiest stretch, from the Gullet through the Butcher's Ball towards Tumbleton, opening with Rhaenyra seemingly poised for victory. A fourth season was ordered in November 2025, so the endgame above is still at least a season away.
For the record: Aegon III grew up to be called the Dragonbane, because the last dragon died during his reign — and Westeros wouldn't see another for nearly a century and a half, until a girl named Daenerys walked into a fire.
