2025 proved a rather lucrative year for the film industry, with a handful of actors standing out thanks to their impressive box office returns. From much-anticipated sequels to fresh takes on beloved franchises, these ten performers led the charge, each contributing to a year of remarkable ticket sales.

Box Office Standouts: The Lower Half

Patrick Wilson rounds out the list at number ten, having reprised his role as Ed Warren in The Conjuring: Last Rites. This final chapter for the franchise’s leading duo, alongside Vera Farmiga, drew in $494 million globally. Wilson also made a brief appearance in the comedy-drama Jay Kelly, which added a modest sum to his total, bringing him to $494.1 million for the year.

Ninth place goes to Joseph Quinn, who stepped into the Marvel universe as Johnny Storm in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The film amassed $520 million, while his role in the war drama Warfare contributed a further $33 million, totalling $553 million for Quinn.

Tom Cruise, a familiar face in action cinema, finds himself in eighth position. Despite high expectations for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the film’s performance was somewhat underwhelming, earning just over $591 million. Not quite the send-off fans had hoped for, but a solid showing nonetheless.

Rising and Returning Talent

David Corenswet, in seventh, brought a new energy to the role of Superman. James Gunn’s stewardship of DC Studios paid off, with Superman taking in $616 million. Corenswet’s sole release this year, but a significant one.

Brad Pitt, a perennial favourite, lands sixth after starring in F1, a sports drama directed by Joseph Kosinski. The story of Sonny Hayes’ return to Formula One racing resonated with audiences, resulting in box office receipts of $631 million. Pitt also took on several producing roles, including documentaries and features, though these did not factor into his acting total.

Pedro Pascal claims fifth, having appeared in three films: Materialists, Eddington, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Combined, these projects brought in $640 million, with Pascal’s versatility and presence clearly in demand.

Breakout Performances and Blockbuster Successes

Mason Thames, at just 18, made a significant impact. His roles in How to Train Your Dragon, Black Phone 2, and Regretting You collectively earned $858 million. Thames also featured in New Year’s Rev, which premiered at TIFF, further cementing his status as one to watch.

Scarlett Johansson takes third, having starred in both Jurassic World Rebirth and The Phoenician Scheme. The former alone brought in $868 million, while the latter added $40 million, for a total of $909 million. Johansson also made her directorial debut with Eleanor the Great, showcasing her range beyond acting.

Jason Momoa, in second, had a single major release: A Minecraft Movie. The live-action adaptation, produced on a $150 million budget, became a runaway success, grossing $958 million. Momoa also appeared in In the Hand of Dante, which premiered at Venice, and is set for a busy 2026 with several projects lined up.
