Henry Cavill and Kevin Hart Suit Up for McG’s New Netflix Spy Comedy
Henry Cavill is suiting up opposite Kevin Hart in McG’s untitled Netflix spy-comedy, chasing bad guys and due dates as a hilariously mismatched duo on the brink of fatherhood.
So, Dwayne Johnson might remain Kevin Hart's number one partner-in-crime (at least on film), but it looks like Henry Cavill is about to have a go at being Hart's new on-screen sidekick. The two are teaming up for a Netflix spy comedy, directed by none other than McG. If that name rings a bell, he’s the fellow behind The Babysitter, Charlie’s Angels (the one with Drew Barrymore, not Kristen Stewart), and Terminator Salvation. To be honest, McG’s track record is hit-and-miss, but you can't deny the projects are never boring.
What’s the Story?
The film doesn't have a title yet—frankly, if it goes the usual Netflix route, they’ll stick ‘Spy Something’ in the name and call it a day. As for the plot: According to THR, it’s about two rival spies who, rather confusingly, find themselves in a Lamaze class (yes, the thing where you breathe funny to survive childbirth) because their wives have become mates. Chaos, inevitably, ensues.
The two blokes—Hart and Cavill—have their secret work worlds collide in various, supposedly hilarious and dangerous ways, and end up having to confide in each other, whether they like it or not. They’re also about to become dads. Honestly, sounds like something written by someone who’s spent too much time watching Mr. & Mrs. Smith reruns, but that could be part of the charm.
Who’s Behind the Scenes?
- Director: McG
- Cast: Kevin Hart, Henry Cavill (Cavill plays the spy, obviously—don’t picture Hart as James Bond just yet)
- Producers: Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Emily Morris for 21 Laps (yeah, the Stranger Things crew)
- Additional Producers: Ryan Reynolds's Maximum Effort banner, after previous team-ups with 21 Laps like Free Guy and The Adam Project
- Hart’s Production Company: Hartbeat (with Luke Kelly-Clyne and Dryan Smiley also producing)
What’s Next for Cavill?
If you’re the type to keep tabs on Henry Cavill, he’s not just chilling in his Superman suit at home. He’s got Enola Holmes 3 coming to Netflix on 1 July. Cavill returns as Sherlock Holmes, with the excellent Millie Bobby Brown as Enola—the real lead, let’s be honest. This time, she’s off to Malta on what’s apparently her trickiest adventure yet. The supporting cast? Helena Bonham Carter, Louis Partridge, Himesh Patel, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, and Susan Wokoma.
And just for good measure, Cavill’s also busy filming Chad Stahelski’s take on Highlander. That’s the one about immortal Scots swinging swords around for mysterious supernatural prizes. There’s a whole line-up joining in: Russell Crowe, Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista, Jeremy Irons, and Djimon Hounsou.
The Take
I’m genuinely curious to see what McG’s going to deliver this time. He doesn’t always hit the mark, but the premise is odd enough to have potential, and I want to see how Cavill and Hart bounce off each other when forced to buddy up as expecting fathers-slash-spies.
