Guy Ritchie's $23 million flop has just knocked Jason Statham off the top of streaming

Streaming charts have a new king (or perhaps more of a cheeky usurper), and it’s not who you might expect. Jason Statham had a tidy little run with his latest action flick Shelter, but his old mate Guy Ritchie has just leapfrogged him with a high-octane team-up featuring Henry Cavill and a bagful of A-listers. If you were betting on Statham to stay on top for 2026, the streaming public has other ideas.

Shelter hit Prime Video back in June and hasn't missed the global top 10 since.

Statham’s Streaming Surge (and Sudden Slip)

Shelter might not have set the box office on fire when it launched earlier this year, but it's found a proper second wind online. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh (he did Kandahar and Angel Has Fallen), the film’s got Statham playing Mason — your classic rugged loner with a murky past, camping out on a windswept island. When he rescues a young girl (that’s Bodhi Rae Breathnach from Hamnet) from a nasty squall, the pair end up in all sorts of bother. Not exactly groundbreaking, but let’s be honest, nobody’s coming to a Statham joint for fresh narrative ground. The main event is The Stath: all battered knuckles, grumpy charisma, and surviving things that would put a rhinoceros in A&E.

Prime Video audiences lapped it up, pushing Shelter straight into the global streaming top 10 for weeks. Box office wise, though? Bit of a damp squib.

Guy Ritchie and Cavill Crash The Party

Still, you can’t get too comfy in a streaming leaderboard. Along comes Guy Ritchie and Henry Cavill with their latest mischief — In the Grey. This one did not exactly roar into cinemas when it opened in May. Frankly, it flopped harder than a collapsed soufflé, scraping together just $23.7 million globally. That’s not a typo — it cost about three times that to make.

The cast might tempt you: Cavill reuniting with Ritchie (they did The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare together), plus Jake Gyllenhaal (would-be Oscar-winner, sometimes beard enthusiast) and Eiza Gonzalez (who also showed up in Ungentlemanly Warfare). The plot? A team of fixers pull off the mother of all heists to recover a $1 billion debt from some very unpleasant people. It's big, brash, and absolutely not subtle.

Despite all that clout, critics were cool on it — 52% on Rotten Tomatoes, not disastrous, but hardly sparkling. Audiences, on the other hand, gobbled it up, scoring it an 82% on Popcornmeter (that’s the one that measures whether real humans had a good time, not just the blokes with notepads).

That good will rocketed to streaming, where In the Grey is, at time of writing, the number four film in the world on Prime Video, a notch above Statham’s Shelter which has slid to fifth. Proper dogfight up at the top end.
