A decade into Tom Holland’s Spidey stint, Sony’s teased a release-date update — though it still hasn’t officially announced Spider-Man 5, leaving fans to fill the gaps.

If you've spent the last decade watching Tom Holland swing between New York skyscrapers, chances are you've been wondering when the next live-action Spider-Man will actually turn up. Well, Sony still haven't locked that down, and if you're hoping for something soon, brace yourself – it's not happening just yet.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has become the highest-grossing Spider-Man film ever released.

Don't Hold Your Breath for Spider-Man 5

This year marks ten years – yes, a full decade – since Holland first zipped himself into the Spidey suit, which is mad when you think about it. His latest outing, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is still pulling in ticket sales and has already taken the crown as the biggest earner out of every other Spider-Man film so far.

So, when exactly is Spider-Man 5 dropping? Sony Pictures boss Ravi Ahuja clarified to Variety that nothing is set in stone. In his own words:

‘We don’t have a date for it yet. A couple years usually, but there’s a Spider-Verse movie coming next year.’

Sony were pleasantly punctual with the last live-action Spider-Man films, rolling them out every two years between 2017 and 2021. Then came a five-year pause for Brand New Day, which makes sense considering the director, Destin Daniel Cretton, has about three projects on the go at any one time. That schedule clash means Spider-Man 5 almost certainly won't follow the old release rhythm. The grapevine says Holland's Peter Parker is set to turn up in the next Avengers flicks, but for a proper solo film, the wait is going to be painful.

Spider-Verse Carries the Torch (For Now)

If you need your Spidey fix before then, you'll get it through animation. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is set to land in cinemas summer next year – or at least, that's the plan. This one will wrap up the animated Miles Morales saga, with the multiverse shenanigans ramping up as Miles faces off with the Spot.

The hype is real, but the project's not had a smooth ride: a major leak forced Sony to bump the film from its original March 2024 date all the way back to June 18, 2027. Everyone involved is keeping their cards close to their chest after that fiasco, but the finish line is now in sight.
