Go on, guess — Zack Snyder’s favourite DC movie is the obvious one

Here we go again: Zack Snyder was recently pressed to crown his finest film, and yes, it was exactly as tricky as it sounds. This took place on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, in amongst a chat about AI in the film industry (which, frankly, is everywhere now) and the state of cinema. But then things took a sharp left turn into pure director filmography warfare, thanks to a head-to-head bracket featuring Snyder's own movies.

Justice League debuted in cinemas in 2017, but the much-hyped "Snyder Cut" only landed in 2021 following persistent fan demand.

Horowitz didn't muck about: he presented Snyder with brutal, bracket-style choices between his own films, whittling them down via pairings until only one remained. It's a bit mad, but surprisingly revealing, as the last film standing would be what Snyder himself sees as his 'best'.

• First up: Dawn of the Dead vs 300 — Snyder goes for '300', leaving brains and zombies at the door.
• Next, Man of Steel against Batman v Superman. Snyder doesn't hesitate (well, maybe just a bit). He insists on the Director's Cut, of course, then admits 'BvS' takes it.
• Justice League is thrown into the mix opposite Watchmen. After a bit of a wince, Snyder lands on 'Justice League'.
• For good measure, Rebel Moon gets a go, squaring off against 'Sucker Punch' — Snyder backs his Netflix epic over the divisive dream-action flick.
• In the semis, 'Justice League' faces off with 'Rebel Moon', and in the final, it faces Snyder's own 'BvS'.

And that's how 'Justice League', specifically Snyder's own extended cut, emerges as his ultimate pick. This probably isn't much of a shock if you've seen the online furore that led to the 'Snyder Cut' actually getting released. The man clearly has a soft spot for what became a fan movement, plus all the saga that surrounded it.

For those who were on Mars in 2021: 'Justice League' originally came out in 2017, but the version Snyder actually directed only saw daylight in 2021, after a frankly staggering campaign from his supporters. The story itself has Diana Prince and Bruce Wayne teaming up the usual suspects — The Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg — to stop Steppenwolf and his parademon crew, on orders from Darkseid (who always looks like he's woken up on the wrong side of the universe), from flattening humanity. Snyder described his hesitation to pick Watchmen over 'Justice League' in typically diplomatic fashion, offering this:

Before the final, Horowitz also pitted 'Sucker Punch' against 'Rebel Moon', and — probably wisely — Snyder went for the space adventure. The 'BvS' vs '300' showdown fell in Batman's favour, too.

None of this will settle those endless debates about Snyder's DC period, but at least now you know: for the bloke himself, 'Justice League' (the director's cut, obviously) sits at the top of the pile, with Batman v Superman and Watchmen fighting for silver and bronze.
