Gal Gadot says DC told her Wonder Woman 3 was happening, then points at how Cavill was dropped

Now that the DCEU has collapsed in on itself and DC Studios is busy rebooting the whole thing with a fresh DCU, the big question was always about who, if anyone, might get to keep their jobs. For ages, it looked like Wonder Woman—or more specifically Gal Gadot—would make the jump. Gadot herself said after meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran that she'd be part of a third Wonder Woman film. Of course, that's not actually happening, and Gadot's finally addressed the whole charade in a recent interview.

The Wonder Woman 3 Non-Starter

Gadot sat down with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where she was surprisingly open about how DC Studios handled her—and not in a good way. Horowitz asked directly if Gunn and Safran had told her she wouldn't be back as Wonder Woman. Gadot's reply:

'They told me the opposite. They were like, "We’re going to develop it with you." But I saw the way everybody else was handled, right? The Henry situation was not handled elegantly, to say the least. Same with Patty. [It] was not handled elegantly.'

She went on to say that, while she's fine about it all personally, she didn't think DC Studios covered themselves in glory—neither with her Wonder Woman situation nor with Henry Cavill (who famously returned as Superman for all of two minutes before getting shown the door again). Apparently, Patty Jenkins—the director behind the previous Wonder Woman films—wasn’t exactly treated with finesse either. For what it’s worth, Gunn has admitted more than once that the whole Cavill mess was bungled on DC’s part.

Still, Gadot made it clear she has no lingering bitterness. She said it's not "about them" and that everyone's just doing what they think is right, which sounded about as diplomatic as it gets:

'I’m so grateful that I got the opportunity to wear these boots and to have the character be so celebrated and be the vessel at that point in time. And I can only wish for whoever one it’s going to be to really, you know, come pure to this journey. Because as much as it’s, like—we’re talking about movies and superheroes and blah blah blah—but this character really means so much to so many of us, to really use it respectfully and bring all the love and light it can to this world, and then enjoy the ride. It was never mine. I was always just a vessel.'

Wonder Woman's Next Era

Even as Gadot retires the golden lasso, DC Studios is still pressing on with a new Wonder Woman film. The new script is coming from Ana Nogueira, who wrote Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. So, yes, Wonder Woman will be back—just not with Gadot's face.

Meanwhile, DC’s approach to the rest of their old guard is all over the shop. Some DCEU actors are sticking around, like Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and John Cena as Peacemaker. Earlier this year, there were also reports that Xolo Maridueña would be back as Blue Beetle in Man of Tomorrow.

I’ll say it: if DC really wanted a clean slate, maybe keeping anyone from the DCEU roster wasn’t the brightest move. This patchwork approach just leaves everyone guessing who’s coming back for another go, and who’s being quietly dropped. Not that DC’s ever been known for making things simple.
