Frozen 3 could make $1.5 billion and still lose Disney's animation crown to Zootopia 2
Zootopia 2 took more than $630 million in China, where Frozen 2 managed about $120 million. That is the gap Elsa has to close.
Frozen 3 is more than a year away, and r/boxoffice has already decided how it ends. On 15 October 2026, a thread titled "Early Frozen 3 predictions. How big can it go?" asked the obvious question, and the top-voted reply was ten words long: "Easy $1.5 billion as long as the quality is decent." Further down, guesses climb to $2 billion, with one commenter who promises $700 million from North America alone and cheerfully admits to having no proof.
Nobody in the thread is wrong about the size. Frozen made around $1.27 billion worldwide in 2013, Frozen 2 took about $1.45 billion in 2019, and the third film opens on 24 November 2027, the American Thanksgiving slot where Disney family films have a habit of printing money. The trouble is that $1.5 billion no longer wins anything.
The crown changed hands
For six years, Frozen 2 was the biggest film Walt Disney Animation had ever made. In early January 2026, Zootopia 2 passed it at $1.46 billion and kept going. By February it was closing in on $1.8 billion and had overtaken Pixar's Inside Out 2 as the highest-grossing Hollywood animated film of all time.

Almost the whole gap was made in one country. Zootopia 2 grossed more than $630 million in China, the biggest total there for any Hollywood film, Avengers: Endgame included. Frozen 2 made roughly $120 million in the same market. The most sober comment in the thread, sitting on a modest nine upvotes, does the maths:
"Anyone who thinks this is a lock to pass Zootopia 2 isn't understanding how big Zootopia is in China. Z2 made $650M there, compared to $120M for Frozen 2. Frozen 3 isn't gonna suddenly 5x its Chinese box office, so it would need massive growth elsewhere to make up the difference."

The $650 million is a touch generous: Deadline put the figure at $630 million in February. The argument survives the correction perfectly well.

Where Elsa still wins
Take China out of both films and the scoreboard flips. Everywhere else on the planet, Elsa is still the bigger star:
- Frozen 2 outside China: roughly $1.33 billion.
- Zootopia 2 outside China: roughly $1.17 billion.
- What Frozen 3 needs outside China to catch up, if Chinese audiences treat it like the last one: about $1.68 billion, a quarter more than Frozen 2 managed.
So the options are a bit grim. Either China, which has never treated Arendelle as its own, suddenly quintuples its appetite for it, or the rest of the world turns up 25% harder for a third instalment. Sequels can grow, but Frozen 2 only beat the original by about 14%, and as another commenter in the thread put it, the novelty of a Frozen sequel is gone.
Frozen 3 can win in Britain, America and Europe and still lose the crown in Shanghai.
The case for growth exists, to be fair. The children who belted out Let It Go in 2013 are now old enough to buy their own cinema tickets, and late November has little else for families to spend money on. That gets Frozen 3 to a record for the franchise, which is all the thread really promises.
It does not get Elsa her title back. Frozen 3 opens on 24 November 2027, and a perfectly respectable $1.5 billion would make it the biggest Frozen ever and only the second-biggest Disney Animation film, behind a rabbit police officer and her fox. For the first time, the studio's favourite princess goes into release chasing someone else's record.
