Gael García Bernal has sparked fresh chatter about Jack Russell’s MCU future — and hints fans could help decide whether we get more Werewolf by Night.

Here we go again with Werewolf by Night, the Marvel special that popped up out of nowhere back in October 2022, charmed pretty much everyone, and vanished almost as quickly. If, like me, you figured Marvel would put Jack Russell and Man-Thing straight into something bigger, well, two years later, we’re still waiting. And the star’s apparently just as impatient as the rest of us.

Bernal’s Reddit Appeal

Gael García Bernal, who brought Jack Russell to life, took to Reddit’s AMA circuit and let slip a bit of Marvel’s original ambition—and his own frustrations with the long silence. When prodded about his time in the MCU, Bernal basically called on fans to twist Marvel’s arm and get this show back on the road.

Fans hadn’t missed that the supernatural side of the MCU felt a bit like a promise that never quite materialised. In case there was any confusion, Bernal confirmed that wasn’t just our imagination; Marvel actually did have further plans for Jack and that odd little corner of the universe.

Here’s Bernal’s candid tip to fans from the AMA:

“I urge you to do whatever you can, whatever is in your power, to push Marvel into some sense of responsibility and also of ambition.”

He also let this slip about the experience and what could’ve been:

“It was for me a wonderful project to do; I loved doing it; I had so much fun experiencing that, and for me it was only a taste. I wish I could do more; we had many plans. I hope they materialize one day!”

The Story So Far

For anyone who’s forgotten, Werewolf by Night shifted the MCU into proper monster/horror territory. Bit of a black sheep, this 53-minute special flung in Jack Russell, Elsa Bloodstone, the living meme that is Man-Thing, and a bunch of assorted monster hunters. The thing ended with Jack and Man-Thing limping off into a world that looked genuinely fun to explore—which, as of 2026, is precisely what Marvel has yet to do.

Werewolf by Night landed on Disney+ back in October 2022 and was quickly re-released in colour for viewers who dislike atmosphere.

So far, updates have been thin on the ground. Michael Giacchino (yes, the Oscar-winning composer who directed the special) reckons he’s still hoping for a sequel, but progress has clearly been glacial. Bernal’s not sitting still, at least—he’s had a run of films and series since, including La Máquina, The End of It, and Magellan, and he’ll next show up in Zero A.D.: The Birth of Christ later this year.

Marvel’s Unmet Ambitions

  • Werewolf by Night was Marvel’s first real dalliance with supernatural horror.
  • Jack Russell’s last appearance left plenty of dangling threads—Elsa, Ulysses Bloodstone, and that Man-Thing friendship.
  • There’s a making-of documentary, Director by Night, still sits on Disney+ for anyone hungry for behind-the-scenes detail.

If you’re just catching up, Werewolf by Night is still up on Disney+ to stream—colour or black-and-white, if you fancy a bit of retro flair or want to see what the fuss was about.
