Final Fantasy 9 Animated Series Resurrected for 2028 Debut
Rumours of cancellation proved premature: the Final Fantasy 9 animated series is back in production, with a new studio aiming for a 2028 release and a fresh 2D take on the beloved RPG.
For a time, it seemed the much-anticipated animated adaptation of Final Fantasy 9 had quietly faded away. Originally announced in 2021, the project was set to be developed by the French outfit Cyber Group Studios, known for their work on the Mini Ninjas series. Hopes were dashed earlier this year when Cyber Group Studios closed its doors, leaving the fate of the adaptation in question.
New Studio, New Prospects
Recent developments, however, suggest the project has found a second wind. According to a report in the French publication Écran Total, the series is now under the stewardship of Euro Visual. The revived production is targeting a release in 2028, with plans for a 2D animated format spanning thirteen episodes, each running for twenty-two minutes.
The magazine provides a brief overview of the storyline, stating that the narrative will centre on six Black Mages, all children of Vivi, one of the original game’s most beloved characters.
The series is described as following six Black Mages who are children of one of Final Fantasy 9's protagonists, Vivi.
Plot Details and Leaks
Further details align with information that surfaced earlier this year, including a leaked synopsis and key artwork for a project titled “Final Fantasy 9: The Black Mages’ Legacy.” The artwork depicts six Black Mages, one of whom appears to be frozen, a detail that matches both the leaked and officially released plot outlines.
RPG Site has noted that these elements are consistent with previous leaks, lending credibility to the current reports about the direction of the series. The focus on the next generation of Black Mages offers a fresh perspective on the world of Gaia, while still drawing on the emotional legacy of the original game.
Remake Hopes Remain Unanswered
Despite renewed interest in the animated adaptation, there is no indication that this development is connected to the long-rumoured remake of the original game. Fans have speculated for years about a possible reimagining, but for now, the animated series stands as the only confirmed project revisiting the classic title.
Still, the fact that the series has survived the closure of its initial production company and found a new home may offer a glimmer of hope to those holding out for further news on a remake. For now, audiences can look forward to a new interpretation of a much-loved story, set to arrive in a few years’ time.
