Fast Forever director still hasn’t read the script Vin Diesel says made him cry

Here we go again with the Fast & Furious saga and, honestly, you would think by now everyone involved would be in lockstep. Yet, apparently not. The director of the next instalment – which is officially titled Fast Forever and (supposedly) wraps up the franchise – says he still hasn’t so much as clapped eyes on the script. Meanwhile, Vin Diesel is out there on social media wiping away tears over how stunningly moving he found it. Nothing is ever boring round here.

Fast Forever is scheduled to hit US cinemas on 17 March 2028.

Director Out of the Loop?

The director in question is Louis Leterrier, who previously took the wheel on Fast X. In a recent interview with Polygon, Leterrier admitted he hasn’t read the script for Fast Forever and, to be blunt, he doesn’t seem entirely in the loop. He also couldn’t offer much in the way of juicy details. Here’s how he phrased it in the interview:

Well, I’d love to tell you the full truth, but I can’t. There will be an ending, and it’s great. I was very, very lucky to be part of the franchise, and I love Vin, and I love Universal. They’re great to work with. So yeah. We’ll see, hopefully.

Not the world’s most convincing hard sell, but there we are.

Vin Diesel's Script Meltdown (in a Good Way)

This bit’s straight from the ever-dramatic Vin Diesel, who, just a few days before Leterrier’s comments, hopped onto Instagram dishing out maximum hype for the script – penned by Mike Leslie. Diesel claimed it was “the best script I have read in decades” and that he was, and I quote, “still crying.” Is it genuine cinematic emotion, or just marketing? With Vin, it’s usually a bit of both, isn’t it.

Delays, Distractions…and Other Projects

If you’re wondering why Leterrier still hasn’t given the script a look, there’s been a cocktail of delays. He told Polygon he had, in another universe, dived into Fast Forever the moment Fast X wrapped, but then the Hollywood strikes happened – and, rather conveniently, he found himself another gig.

• Leterrier’s next film, The Last House (with Greta Lee and Wagner Moura), lands on Netflix on 7 August 2026.
• He’s also wrapping up another project – likely Liminal, a sci-fi actioner starring Vanessa Kirby and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

Leterrier himself couldn’t resist a little jokey commentary, effectively saying, look, Universal’s built an actual theme park ride for Fast & Furious – so this franchise has to have an ending, doesn’t it? Someone’s got to land the plane, or the car, or the submarine.
