Fan-favorite crime series Whitstable Pearl axed after 3 seasons
Acorn TV has pulled the plug on Whitstable Pearl after three seasons, axing the cozy crime favorite ahead of Season 4 and leaving its biggest mystery hanging, according to reports. Cast and crew are said to be devastated as fans lose out on closure.
If you were quietly glued to the charming Kent coast courtesy of Whitstable Pearl, well, there’s no easy way to put this: looks like it’s all over. Acorn TV, in their infinite wisdom, have pulled the plug before filming a fourth series, so that’s that – no tidy resolution, no chance for the big 'Will they, won’t they' to play out, and no more crime-solving with a side order of oysters. It’s an abrupt end for a drama that seemed designed to tick along comfortingly forever.
Acorn TV Drops the Axe
Word’s come out via The Sun that Acorn TV – which built a mini-empire on this sort of gentle whodunnit – wants to shift focus to other projects. That’s cold comfort for fans, and apparently even worse for the cast and crew, who might well have expected years more steady work and cream teas on the jetty.
The heart of Whitstable Pearl is Kerry Godliman as Pearl Nolan, the most industrious restaurateur/private detective in British telly. Howard Charles plays DCI Mike McGuire, the gruff big city copper who drops into town and, inevitably, into Pearl’s ever-complicated life. The on-off energy between those two has been the backbone of the whole show.
'It’s absolutely devastating for everybody involved as they feel the series will be left incomplete,' a production source told The Sun. They also reckon fans will be just as gutted, especially about the unresolved romance – 'as the "will they, won’t they" storyline has been a huge part of the drama.'
No Ending for Pearl and McGuire
The show spent three years teasing out the central tension between Pearl and McGuire. They started out bickering after his move from London, but every series nudged them closer – not that the scripts ever let them settle things properly. There’s no fourth series on the way, so that slow-burn will-he-won’t-he story ends with a bang of... nothing.
It’s not just Acorn that loses out. Whitstable Pearl was getting a decent look-in over on Channel 4 and U&Drama’s streaming platforms, too. The show was an adaptation of Julie Wassmer’s book series, and you got the feeling they’d barely scratched the surface of all the crimes Kent has to offer. Guess we’ll never know what else those book plots could have delivered.
What Happens Next for the Cast
- Kerry Godliman – soon to star as Detective Inspector Andrea Dalziel in ITV’s reboot of Dalziel and Pascoe, along with Nina Singh.
- Howard Charles – future projects unannounced, but no doubt he’ll pop up somewhere suitably brooding.
As cancellations go, this one’s a bit of a kick, especially if you’re the sort of viewer who’s into slow-burn mysteries (romantic or criminal) and likes their crime dramas by the sea, with plenty of British character actors in leisurewear.
