Every Year After ending explained: the real reason the lead leaves
Prime Video’s YA hit Every Year After ends its 10-episode season with a decisive call on Percy and Sam — and one gut-punch goodbye. Here’s how the finale lands and why that key character leaves.
Right, so Prime Video have just wrapped up their new YA drama, 'Every Year After', and, frankly, if you were looking for neat and tidy conclusions, you’re not going to find them here. Based on Carley Fortune's best-selling novel 'Every Summer After', the show doesn't so much tie up its plotlines as leave them scattered all over the lakeside.
Do Percy and Sam Actually End Up Together?
Let’s get to the burning question from the entire ten-episode series: do Percy and Sam finally work it out? You’ve seen the will-they-won’t-they for hours now — but the big finale? Properly open-ended. After Sue’s memorial, Percy and Sam share a slightly poignant evening, but don't expect any grand romantic gesture. Instead, you’re left with uncertainty. The writers have left the door open for another season, if Prime Video fancies it.
Percy comes out with lines like, ‘We have a history of messy goodbyes, and I think we're owed a proper one’, and that about sets the tone. Meanwhile, Sam's not exactly over Percy's betrayal. He actually says, 'I want so much to forgive you' before admitting he just can’t.
Then there’s a time jump. Percy gets a letter from Sam—including the keys to Sue’s tavern. Next summer, Percy and Delilah are reopening the place together in Barry’s Bay. No sign of Sam at the actual event, which would’ve been far too conventional, obviously. Instead, he arrives afterwards, catching Percy mid-dishwashing, suggesting—maybe—they might not be finished as a pair after all. But again, that’s where it ends.
What Else Goes Down in the Finale?
- Chantal and Jordie: These two, at least, make it official and become a proper couple.
- Charlie: Out of nowhere, he has chest pains and collapses while looking at a photo of himself, Sam, and Percy on a boat—a little dramatic, but apparently all par for the course.
- Loose Ends Everywhere: There are quite a few storylines left dangling, so don’t be surprised if the show is quietly angling for a second helping.
If you want to watch the whole thing play out—or just see if any of these plot threads ever get resolved—'Every Year After' is streaming now on Prime Video.
