The Pitt built its reputation on realism — a cast of fresh faces who look like actual overworked hospital staff rather than TV stars. Look at the surnames a little longer, though, and Hollywood royalty starts peeking through the scrubs.

At least four of the show's actors come from famous acting families.

  • Taylor Dearden — plays Dr Mel King. Daughter of Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston and actress Robin Dearden.
  • Fiona Dourif — plays Dr Cassie McKay. Daughter of Brad Dourif: Oscar nominee for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Grima Wormtongue in The Lord of the Rings, and the voice of Chucky.
  • Isa Briones — plays Dr Trinity Santos. Daughter of stage star Jon Jon Briones, celebrated as the Engineer in Miss Saigon.
  • Mackenzie Astin — guest-starred in season 1 as Jereme. Son of Oscar winner Patty Duke and The Addams Family's John Astin — and brother of Sean Astin.

The Breaking Bad connection

Taylor Dearden, 32, has become one of the show's breakouts as the neurodivergent, endlessly kind Dr King. Her father needs no introduction; her mother, Robin Dearden, racked up TV credits including Murder, She Wrote and the soap Generations.

Dearden had already built her own CV before The Pitt — American Vandal, Sweet/Vicious, For All Mankind — which is partly why plenty of viewers watched a full season without clocking whose daughter she is.

The Astin dynasty

Mackenzie Astin, 51, appeared in season 1 as Jereme — one half of a pair of siblings forced to decide whether to honour their elderly father's living will or override it and put him on a ventilator. One of the season's most devastating storylines.

His brother is Sean Astin: Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings, Mikey in The Goonies, Rudy in Rudy. Their parents were Patty Duke, who won an Oscar for The Miracle Worker, and John Astin, television's original Gomez Addams.

Two of them have acted opposite their parents

Isa Briones shared a franchise with her dad on Star Trek: Picard — she starred as the android Soji, while Jon Jon appeared in season 2. Her mother Megan and brother Teo are musical theatre performers too, so the Briones household is essentially a company.

Fiona Dourif went one better: she stars across the Chucky films and TV series as Nica Pierce, while her father voices the killer doll trying to destroy her. Family bonding, horror-franchise style.

For the record: Bryan Cranston and Robin Dearden met on a 1986 episode of Airwolf, in which he played a villain who held her character hostage. Their daughter grew up to play the kindest doctor on television. Some career arc.
