CinemaCon footage unveils Doctor Doom’s first look in Avengers: Doomsday—and teases surprise Marvel team-ups that could shake up the next phase.

Alright, Marvel really went for it at CinemaCon this year. They dropped the first full trailer for 'Avengers: Doomsday'—but only for the people in the room. No public release, just a flood of descriptions pouring out of Las Vegas and onto the internet courtesy of everyone who got a peek.

So, what did they actually show? Here’s a rundown, because this trailer is apparently stacked with crossovers, team-ups, and a couple of wild face-offs. Oh, and prepare yourself: Robert Downey Jr. is officially back, but not as Tony Stark. Instead, he’s playing the big bad himself—Doctor Doom. That’s about as big a character jump (and maybe as much typecasting whiplash) as you're going to get in one movie. Marvel really isn’t holding back this time.

Who’s Teaming Up—and Who’s Throwing Down?

The trailer crams in just about every corner of the MCU, plus the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and some returning favorites. It’s pulling storylines from Jonathan Hickman’s 'Time Runs Out' comics and the 'Avengers vs. X-Men' saga, if you’re into source material. Translation: almost everyone’s either teaming up or fighting someone you wouldn’t expect. Here’s the major moments from the footage:

  • Everybody at New Avengers Tower:
Early on, there’s a giant gathering of heroes inside New Avengers Tower, which, in a nice bit of Marvel continuity, is being run by the ex-Thunderbolts team. In the room: Sam Wilson (now Captain America, played by Anthony Mackie), Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and—making their MCU debut—the Fantastic Four. Thor actually shows up with the Fantastic Four, which looks like the jump-off point before everyone splits up for separate missions across the multiverse.
  • Shang-Chi vs. Gambit:
This one sent fans into a frenzy: Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) takes on Gambit (Channing Tatum, finally getting to be Gambit fifteen years after the casting rumors started). They face off in the X-Mansion, complete with glowing ten rings and Gambit’s trademark purple energy. Visual chaos in the best possible way.
  • Yelena Belova vs. Mystique:
Another X-Mansion brawl. Yelena (Florence Pugh) hurls a baton at Mystique (Rebecca Romijn, back and newly updated with the comic look—white outfit, short red bob). Mystique, of course, catches the baton and immediately duplicates Yelena’s appearance. Veteran Marvel watchers will remember similar trickery from both 'Avengers: Endgame' and the first 'X-Men' movie.
  • Mr. Fantastic vs. Nightcrawler tease, with Captain America in the mix:
In the same sequence, Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) and Sam Wilson’s Captain America are at the X-Mansion, and Reed is physically holding Sam back from… something. Details are fuzzy, but word is this is the lead-in to a Mr. Fantastic/Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming) match-up.
  • Fantastic Four + The Falcon & Bucky Meet Black Panther’s Crew:
You get the Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), and Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez) all showing up in Wakanda to meet Shuri (Letitia Wright) and M’Baku (Winston Duke). This is apparently a nod to Black Panther’s comic origins with the Fantastic Four, but, in classic Marvel grayed-out-trailer fashion, a few characters had been previously edited out for surprise’s sake.
  • Thor vs. Doctor Doom:
In what sounds like a clear power level reset for Thor, Downey’s Doctor Doom just stops Stormbreaker with his bare hand—exactly how Hela stopped Mjolnir in 'Thor: Ragnarok'. Thor literally says, 'There has never been a threat that scares me more than Doctor Doom.' Coming from a guy who’s fought Thanos, that’s saying something.
  • Thor and Steve Rogers Reunite:
The trailer wraps up with a fairly sentimental scene: Steve Rogers (Chris Evans, out of the Cap suit, sporting long hair and some very not-retired-looking civilian clothes) shows back up, and Thor doesn’t believe it’s really him—until Steve calls Mjolnir to hand, just to make the point stick.

'This threat is so big, Steve Rogers actually un-retires'

Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers are the only OG Avengers coming back this time around, joining the now-ensemble cast to deal with a big bad (Doctor Doom) that apparently scares even them.

Downey as Doom is a flex, but it also basically throws out any pretense of not blowing the doors off the MCU. And if you’re keeping score, it’s been seven years since 'Endgame', and even longer since Thor and Cap first shared the screen. Of course, Marvel’s going to make that reunion count.

Who’s Who? The Stacked Cast

Here’s the rundown (at least from what we know out of the trailer leaks and reports):
Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom
Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Chris Evans as Steve Rogers
Anthony Mackie as Captain America (Sam Wilson)
Paul Rudd as Ant-Man
Simu Liu as Shang-Chi
Channing Tatum as Gambit
Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova
Rebecca Romijn as Mystique
Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards / Mr. Fantastic
Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler
Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing
Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm / The Invisible Woman
Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes
Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres / The Falcon
Letitia Wright as Shuri
Winston Duke as M'Baku

If you wanted a Marvel movie that throws everything (and everyone) at the wall, 'Avengers: Doomsday' might actually deliver on the hype this time.
