Tom Holland’s DM drought is over: after telling The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon he’d been left on read by Erling Haaland, the Manchester City superstar has finally replied — and accepted his dinner invite.

Right, if you ever wondered what happens when a Marvel superhero tries to be mates with a Premier League goal machine, Tom Holland and Erling Haaland have just supplied the most entertaining answer possible. About time, too. Here’s what’s gone down, and honestly, the details are both a bit awkward and very entertaining.

Tom Holland slides into Haaland's DMs… and gets properly blanked

This all kicked off when Tom Holland, your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man, confessed on Jimmy Fallon's show that he'd messaged Erling Haaland—yes, Manchester City’s Norwegian Terminator—hoping to take him out for some food. Holland was after a nice dinner, maybe a bit of football chat, you know, in that ‘celeb bonding’ way.

How did Haaland reply? Well, he didn’t. No polite brush-off, no ‘Sorry mate, I’m at training’. Just pure silence. Holland revealed the whole thing on Fallon, and to be fair, he took the snub pretty well, admitting there wasn't even a flimsy 'I'm busy’ excuse. Poor bloke looked like he’d offered to buy his mate a pint and been left on read.

Fallon stirs the pot

Jimmy Fallon wasn’t going to let this slide. He pulled up a post during the show from Culture Crave which claimed Haaland didn’t respond to Holland because he genuinely had ‘no idea’ who Tom was. The twist? Apparently, the City striker’s not really a film person and just assumed this random chap in his inbox wanted to buy him dinner.

Holland copped to the whole thing, saying the post was absolutely spot on—he genuinely did reach out for a dinner, and got a grand total of nothing back.

Haaland's late invite acceptance (with zero shame)

Well, thanks to the Tonight Show's Instagram account posting a clip of the incident—and probably a tidal wave of fans tagging Haaland—he finally replied. Haaland jumped into the comment section and wrote:

'Dinner invitation accepted @tomholland2013. A little late. Just name the place!'

An admission he missed the message? Yes. A bit of sheepishness? Not a bit—just straight to the point, like he was smacking in a tap-in at the Etihad.

Fallon, never missing an opportunity to get involved, then joked that if they need a third at dinner, he’s available. Classic chat-show move, trying to wedge himself into what could easily be the weirdest three-way dinner in celebrity land this year.

The internet reacts, obviously

  • One user pointed out, 'Well, he did cast the spell to make everyone forget who Spider-Man was.’
  • Another reckoned, 'I love how Tom reacted to him not responding.'
  • A third suggested, 'Should’ve told "I’m Spiderman."'
  • Plenty found it amusing that Haaland, one of the most famous footballers on the planet, genuinely didn't recognise Tom Holland—proof that not everyone in the football world is glued to Hollywood blockbusters.
  • Calls came in for Haaland to appear on Fallon’s show, which wouldn’t be the worst idea considering this unintentional comedy double-act.

If anyone in the world needed reminding, footballers can be just as blissfully unaware of A-list actors as anyone. And apparently, a dinner involving a footballer who doesn’t watch movies and a Spiderman who gets blanked in the DMs could actually be happening.
