EastEnders icon Michelle Ryan could be written out as kill-off report gains momentum
EastEnders shake-up on the way? Reports say Michelle Ryan is being written out — and the buzz is producers might kill off Zoe Slater. Ryan lit up the Square in 2000 and her 2005 farewell still looms large; now fans fear the next exit could be permanent.
Well, here we go again: EastEnders is rumoured to be giving the boot — possibly quite literally — to a character who’s been in and out of Albert Square since Tony Blair was in Number 10. Michelle Ryan, who most of us will always remember as Zoe Slater, is reportedly being shown the Queen Vic’s back door, with whispers that her character might actually get killed off this time.
A Quick Recap for Anyone Who’s Not Been Paying Attention Since 2000
Michelle Ryan first rocked up in Walford back in September 2000, immediately getting swept up in the kind of soapy chaos EastEnders does better than anyone. She played Zoe Slater, a character you’ll struggle to forget if you ever tuned in for the infamous ‘Who Killed Den?’ debacle, not to mention the nonstop bust-ups with her mum, Kat Moon.
Her original exit in 2005 was the stuff of soap legend: months of simmering drama, murder cover-ups, emotional showdowns, and, finally, Zoe hopping into a black cab, sobbing, as she waved goodbye to the Square — proper end-of-an-era stuff.
The Comeback That Never Really Caught Fire
Now, in true EastEnders fashion, last year saw Zoe make a surprise reappearance after a two-decade absence. Michelle Ryan popped back up in June for what looked to be just a cameo, then officially rejoined the regular cast in September. This return, if you believe the tabloids, was partly inspired by the soap’s looming 40th anniversary and, somewhat endearingly, by a chat she’d had with Kacey Ainsworth (who played her on-screen aunt Little Mo, for anyone keeping up with the family tree at home).
But barely a year later, apparently the party’s well and truly over. According to The Sun, Michelle Ryan asked for a bit of time off earlier this year, which quickly turned into her outright leaving. The real kicker: the writers reportedly aren’t allowing for another cab ride out of town this time. Rumour is, they’re going for the full exit — that is, killing Zoe off entirely.
What’s Actually Going On Backstage?
The usual unnamed ‘sources’ are painting a less-than-glamorous picture of her return, with claims that it all fell a bit flat. Some fans apparently weren’t thrilled to see Zoe back after all these years, and certain corners of the production team were miffed that such a heavily-hyped comeback fizzled out almost immediately. Let’s just say, for a character with as much history (and baggage) as Zoe, nobody seemed to know what to do with her.
'Michelle’s long-awaited return has been somewhat flat and lacklustre.'
There’s also the suggestion that the atmosphere on set wasn’t exactly jubilant. Not only did viewers respond coolly, but those behind the scenes were left a bit frustrated — why bring her back only to give her the chop almost straightaway?
- Michelle Ryan’s original run: September 2000 – June 2005
- Return appearance: June 2025 (just a brief stint)
- Rejoined regular cast: September 2025
- Reported last filming date: last month
- Expected on-screen exit: Scheduled for upcoming months on BBC One
In case you’re wondering — and who isn’t, let’s be honest — none of this has been officially confirmed by the BBC yet, but given how these things usually play out, don’t be surprised if the spoilers turn out to be true and Zoe Slater gets a rather more permanent send-off in the very near future.
