Stephen King’s sci‑fi series has a second season on the way very soon
MGM+ is dragging us back into Stephen King’s supernatural world, with a hit sci-fi series gearing up for Season 2 in fall 2026.
MGM+ is bringing The Institute back for a second round of supernatural weirdness, so if you enjoyed the first batch of psychic kids in peril, you won't have to wait much longer for more. The network's kept tight-lipped on the exact premiere date, but they have confirmed it's a fall 2026 launch and production has already wrapped. So, no endless limbo between seasons — not bad going, considering some series feel like they've been in post-production since the dawn of time.
The Institute returns to MGM+ for series two in autumn 2026 — new episodes are already filmed and ready to go.
Returning to the Shadows
This second season picks up after the chaos of the Luke Ellis escape drama, which made up most of the action in the first eight episodes. If you're tracking this against Stephen King's original 2019 book, you'll notice the series went a bit off-piste in the finale, setting up storylines nowhere to be found in the novel. Not complaining — TV loves a twist — but it's worth clocking that we're deep in 'loosely inspired by' territory now.
Behind the scenes, Benjamin Cavell is heading up the writing and adaptation again, and Jack Bender (from From, if you've missed that one) is handling directorial and production duties. Not to be understated: King himself is still involved as an executive producer, which always adds a bit of confidence it's not about to veer into total nonsense.
Cast, New Faces, and What's Next
Most of the cast comes back for another go: Joe Freeman returns as Luke, Ben Barnes is back as Tim Jamieson, and Mary-Louise Parker again turns up as the ever-unsettling Ms. Sigsby. But there's at least one new wildcard in the mix: Alfie Allen (yeah, Theon from Game of Thrones) pops up in the teaser images, although as usual, details about who he's actually playing are under wraps for now. The first-look material shows Luke skulking behind a door, Tim having a word with him, and Ms. Sigsby looking cagey in a study. Classic Institute business — all very murky.
- MGM+ greenlit the second season back in August 2025, just after series one wrapped.
- Filming on this new eight-episode run finished in June 2026.
If you're keeping tabs on the wider Stephen King universe on TV, it's getting crowded. Prime Video's Carrie adaptation drops October 7, HBO is working up another season of IT: Welcome to Derry, and meanwhile you've got Mike Flanagan steering a fresh spin on The Mist, plus new attempts at The Stand, Mister Yummy, and yet another remake — Cujo heads to Netflix soon. For now, though, MGM+ hasn't committed to a third trip to The Institute.
