Keanu Reeves’ Point Break is finally getting a sequel — on TV

Right, so you remember Point Break—that gloriously over-the-top '90s adrenaline rush with Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze surfing, skydiving, and robbing banks while wearing US president masks. Well, we’re not getting another film, but the franchise is making a return: this time it’s going the telly route, not the multiplex.

Here's the headline: AMC has decided we need more Point Break in our lives and has officially ordered a sequel series for both AMC and AMC+. So, not a reboot, and not yet another ill-fated remake (see: 2015), but a proper follow-up set after the events of Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 classic. Alcon Television Group is the main player behind the scenes, and they’ve got AMC Studios and StudioCanal along for the ride.

Production on the new Point Break series is slated to kick off in early 2027.

So, what’s the plot?

The next chapter picks up decades on from the original. The official description says we’ll be meeting a new crew of criminals, who are modelling themselves after the infamous Ex-Presidents—those iconic bank robbers from the first film. The Feds, a bit desperate, decide to bring in a former pro surfer with a 'difficult history' to try to slip into the group and bring them down from the inside. No prizes for guessing that’s the Johnny Utah stand-in (unless, by some miracle, Keanu fancies coming back for a cameo—don’t count on it), but no cast has been named yet.

If you need reminding, Point Break was about a fresh-faced FBI agent, Johnny Utah (Keanu himself), investigating a bizarre string of bank jobs perpetrated by surfers, headed up by Swayze’s spiritual Bodhi. Utah went undercover, caught waves, and found himself getting a bit too close for comfort to the outlaws he was supposed to stop. The original cast included Gary Busey (in proper wild man mode), Lori Petty, John C. McGinley, and a whole line-up of cult favourites.

Who's running the show?

They’re not just grabbing a random writing team for this, either. Showrunners Dave Kalstein and Christopher C. Rogers (he’s one of the brains behind 'Halt and Catch Fire') are leading the charge. For those sceptical about yet another legacy TV spin-off, Kalstein and Rogers are clearly fans, not just hired guns. Here’s what they had to say when the news was announced:

So: original film’s world, new rogues gallery, spiritual surfers, and a dodgy ex-surfer going back undercover. Make of that what you will.
