Done waiting for Supernatural’s Jared Padalecki-led Guarding Stars? The Netflix date is set

Netflix clearly has a thing for book-to-film romcoms set in the South, and they're leaning into that trend again with Guarding Stars, their next big play for autumn streaming dominance. If you're already picturing cowboy boots, bodyguards, and a Christmas tree all crammed into one plot—well, you're not far off.

Netflix is dropping Guarding Stars on 18 November.

From Bestseller to Streaming Star

The film is based on Katherine Center's book The Bodyguard, which did a fair stint on the bestseller lists after it came out in 2022. The basic setup: an executive protection agent—think tough, no-nonsense, properly trained—is assigned to look after a Hollywood action star during the Christmas holidays (because of course it's Christmas). Naturally, both end up catching feelings while awkwardly trying to avoid them, and various secrets are thrown in for good measure. The book hit shelves via St. Martin's Press back in July 2022.

What's In a Name?

If “Guarding Stars” doesn’t sound quite right to you, you're not mad. The film started life with the same title as the novel, but the obvious problem is that Warner Bros. have already cornered the “Bodyguard” market, thanks to Costner and Houston back in 1992. So, to avoid any courtroom drama (and, I suspect, to stop everyone humming 'I Will Always Love You' during meetings), the filmmakers got in touch with actual readers to hash out what it should be called. The result is the new title, “Guarding Stars”—less nostalgia, more Texas romance energy.

Padalecki, Meester, and a Strange Ensemble

It doesn't seem like you can swing a lasso at Netflix these days without hitting either Jared Padalecki or Leighton Meester. They're headlining this one, and then there's a genuinely odd supporting cast. Andie MacDowell has a key role; country singer Walker Hayes (yep, the guy behind that “Fancy Like” song that got stuck in your head every time you opened TikTok) will turn up too; Toby Sandeman—from Running Point—and Noah LaLonde (of My Life With the Walter Boys) are somewhere in this mix. But here's the curveball: CM Punk—yes, the wrestling star, also doing a spot of voice acting in Zootopia 2—will appear. That casting department was not short of ideas.

Romcom Cred

Direction is in the hands of Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, who knows her way around a romance after Netflix's Purple Hearts and, going further back, Aquamarine. Script duties fell to Erin Cardillo and Richard Keith, who have Virgin River and Isn't It Romantic under their belts, so expect plenty of heart-to-hearts and manufactured misunderstandings. Production is split between Little Engine Productions (that's Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo) and Padalecki's own Living in the Asterisk banner, which he runs with wife Genevieve.
