Fifteen years on, Zack Snyder’s action fantasy cult classic gets a director’s cut
More than a decade on, one of Zack Snyder’s cult favourites is being re-released as a director’s cut — but which one’s getting the upgrade?
Right, if there’s one thing you cannot accuse Zack Snyder of, it’s not having an enthusiastic fan base. Over the past ten years or so, he’s practically become an institution for obsessive followings, what with the DC Extended Universe and those now-infamous internet campaigns. In all honesty, if you’re online, you could barely avoid it. After all the flying capes, he wrapped that particular superhero era with Zack Snyder's Justice League – a home-streamed epic in 2021 that was less film and more event at HBO Max.
Snyder’s not done digging through his back catalogue, either. He turned up recently on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast to drop a tidbit for those who never forgot Sucker Punch, his 2011 bonkers fantasy-action hybrid – the one with fights, robots, dragons, and a fair bit of dancing, depending on how you look at it. There’s been chatter about a proper director’s cut of that film for years, and now, at last, Snyder’s confirmed that it’s actually happening. He says the new cut is ‘definitely on the docket’, and at this point it’s down to sorting out the licensing.

He also mentioned there’s some fresh work to do with the cast, specifically some extra ADR (that’s dubbing or voice work done in the studio after filming – usually for clarity or new lines). And if that wasn’t enough for completists, apparently they've already filmed brand new footage to slip into this extended version.

At this point, it’s a waiting game for fans: the rights need sorting, the cast have to get back behind a microphone, and we’ll finally get to see whatever new take Snyder wants people to register as the definitive version. Sucker Punch always split opinion – and frankly, the theatrical version didn’t get much love at the time – but if you’ve been craving to see what Snyder originally wanted out in the wild, it seems your time is finally coming.
