Four years on from its debut, Netflix’s The Watcher is finally stirring again — and the returning cast are locked in.

Plenty of Netflix shows get renewed and dropped before you know it, but every now and again one just goes radio-silent for yonks. The Watcher was very much in that camp — one minute you’ve got the world talking about sinister letters and over-the-top neighbours, next thing it vanishes for years. But now, finally, Netflix has piped up about Season 2 — and yes, it’s actually happening.

The Watcher season one hit Netflix in October 2022, followed by a renewal announcement just a month later, but barely a peep since then until now.

Four Years Between Updates

The big scoop — confirmed by Variety, no less — is that production on Season 2 is officially starting this year, and they’re filming in New York. Doesn’t sound like Westfield, New Jersey, but you can’t be too precious about geography at this point. The first series was created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, the same duo behind assorted other glossy drama-thrillers, and it originally premiered back in October 2022. Fans have been sat waiting for word ever since the initial renewal, which landed incredibly quickly after launch. And then…absolute silence. No announcements, no teases, and certainly no behind-the-scenes TikToks. Just this week, Netflix finally broke cover and confirmed season 2 is in gear.

No details yet on who’s coming back from the original ensemble, or which new faces will be squinting suspiciously over neighbourhood hedges. At the moment, it’s a total mystery whether we’ll see the likes of Naomi Watts or Bobby Cannavale returning, or if someone else's name will adorn those menacing letters.

The True Story – If You Can Call It That

If you need a refresher, The Watcher takes its inspiration from a doozy of a real-life mystery. The story grew out of Reeves Wiedeman’s 2018 article for The Cut – 'The Haunting of a Dream House' – about a couple who bought what should have been their forever home in Westfield, New Jersey, back in 2014. Except instead of welcoming neighbours and a nice dog walk at dusk, they got harassed by a stalker styling themselves as “The Watcher”, dropping unsettling notes claiming they’d kept an eye on the place for generations. The harassment rolled on for years, from 2014 through 2017, and the case never resulted in any charges. The family finally moved out, still none the wiser, in 2022.

Season one assembled a properly heavyweight cast: Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale, Isabel Gravitt, Luke David Blumm, Jennifer Coolidge, Margo Martindale, Richard Kind, Mia Farrow, Terry Kinney, and several more.

  • Season 2 now confirmed after nearly four years of silence
  • Filming begins this year in New York
