Paramount and Warner Bros. are finally pressing ahead with their merger — and they’re doing it under a new name.

Well, after months of speculation and Wall Street gossip, it’s official: Paramount and Warner Bros. are merging, and from today you’ll have to start getting used to a new studio name. The whole lot will be going forward as Skydance, that being the moniker of David Ellison’s own film company — now repurposed as the title for one of the biggest media conglomerates on the planet. Not the sort of news you get over your morning toast every day.

Here’s how David Ellison chose to frame it on his social media announcement: “What once was the peak, is now just the beginning. Paramount and Warner Bros. shaped over a century of culture. By combining them, we aren't rewriting history — we're equipping these iconic studios with a more powerful engine. Together, we are Skydance: a creative-first home for bold, quality storytelling. We chose this name for a few important reasons. First and foremost, as we bring Paramount and Warner Bros. together, we wanted to preserve what has made each of these studios iconic. Both have distinct identities, extraordinary legacies and brands that have resonated with audiences for generations. We never wanted a new corporate identity to diminish, alter, or overshadow either one. Instead, we wanted a name that would give the combined company an identity of its own while allowing Paramount and Warner Bros. — and all our extraordinary brands — to remain in the spotlight. We have big goals for Skydance, and we intend to pursue them with passion, imagination, and a willingness to take smart risks. At the same time, we will honor what makes Paramount and Warner Bros. special — giving both studios the opportunity to grow, tell more great stories, and bring those stories to even broader audiences around the world, powered by the scale and capabilities of Skydance. I couldn't be more excited about what we're going to build together.”

Two giants, one umbrella

So yes, Ellison has now confirmed what had been widely rumoured: both studios, with their separate legacies dating back to the dawn of Hollywood, will now work together under the Skydance banner. This covers everything — films, TV, the lot — coming under one umbrella, with Skydance plugging itself in as the central hub. The choice of the Skydance name was deliberate, according to Ellison, to avoid either studio’s brand feeling like it had been gobbled up. Officially, the names Paramount and Warner Bros. will still get used in the actual branding and credits, but corporate-wise it’s all Skydance on the masthead.

Paramount and Warner Bros. are combining under the Skydance name, but both classic brands will still appear on future film and TV projects.

What now?

The announcement was made with all the usual CEO speechifying, but here’s the detail that actually matters: both studios keep their identities, but Skydance is now the ‘parent’. As for what changes on the ground — films in the pipeline, TV shows mid-stream — Ellison and co. insist that the new set-up is there to 'empower' both legacy studios to grow, take more creative swings, and generally crank up the scale of what they’re doing. No hard details just yet on new projects or executive reshuffles, but with these two old giants suddenly sharing a roof, expect more cross-pollination behind the scenes, plus some complicated franchise maths to follow.
