If you’re wondering about Lanterns’ future, stars J. Alphonse Nicholson and Jasmine Cephas Jones have addressed the show’s Season 2 chances — and what they’d want to explore.

Right, let’s talk Lanterns. HBO’s latest DC outing has only just arrived, but apparently that’s not stopped the cast themselves from already dreaming about what a possible season 2 might look like. I know what you’re thinking: typical actors, always angling for another gig. Except in this case, the numbers are very much in their corner.

‘Come on, 9.3 million in three days? We’ve got to get a season 2.’

That’s J. Alphonse Nicholson being admirably blunt about his hopes, in a chat with ScreenRant. And honestly, he’s not wrong – those are solid figures for a streamer. But before you get too excited, it’s not greenlit yet. Both HBO and DC Studios, as well as Warner Bros. TV, are still on the fence about the show’s future. So for now, it’s just cast wishful thinking.

What Do the Actors Want from Season 2?

Nicholson and Jasmine Cephas Jones (the two play John Stewart’s parents, if you’re not up on your DCU family trees) had quite a bit to say about where they’d want things to go. Let’s break it down:

  • Nicholson is after a proper redemption arc for his character, John Stewart Sr. He’s dying for more focus on John Sr. trying to put himself back together, and especially interested in what things would look like with a teenage John knocking about.
  • He also flagged the ongoing… shall we say, friction with Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler): apparently Chandler’s Hal nicks something from John Sr – not once, but twice. Nicholson’s dying to know, where the hell do they take that after such blunt betrayal?
  • Jones fancies a much deeper dive into Bernadette’s, well, fire. ‘Fiery’ is very much her word for the character – she’s got this wild, angry energy that Jones is itching to see unleashed. Her highlight: a particularly tense moment where Bernadette calmly takes a gun off John Sr, strips the ammo, all while wrangling young John. Parenting goals, I suppose, if your goals include crisis management with firearms.

Backstage News

Behind the scenes, there’s already movement: Damon Lindelof (the show’s creator) apparently let slip that Chris Mundy is heading up a new writers’ room. That doesn’t mean the show is confirmed to continue, but the wheels might be turning. And if you’re keeping tabs on the wider DC Universe – Aaron Pierre, who’s already starring in Lanterns, is set to show up again in 2027’s Man of Tomorrow.

Lanterns pulled in 9.3 million viewers in just three days.
