Kurt Sutter isn’t on board with FX’s Sons of Anarchy spin-off featuring Charlie Hunnam — and he’s taken to social media to spell out why.

Time for a bit of Sons of Anarchy news, and this one’s genuinely out of left field. Charlie Hunnam is heading up a brand new spin-off called Legends over at FX, and yes, you read that right — but Kurt Sutter, the original series creator, is nowhere near it. That’s despite Hunnam himself being front and centre, with a proper Sons cast reunion to boot. It’s all a bit unexpected, honestly, considering how closely Sutter was tied to everything SAMCRO back in the day.

Who’s Actually Making Legends?

Legends has officially been given the greenlight by FX, and the headline detail here is Sutter’s total absence from the project. He’s not writing, producing, or even consulting, which is pretty striking when you think back to his all-in approach on Sons of Anarchy (not to mention his stint as Otto Delaney). Sutter didn’t just stay quiet about the news, either — he took to his Instagram with a video statement as soon as word got out, presumably to get ahead of the rumour mill.

Here’s how he put it in his own words on social media:

I’m not involved with Legends at all — nor should I be.

If that feels a bit blunt, he did expand on the reasoning, stressing that Legends isn’t actually about the original characters or anything deep from SoA’s mythology. According to Sutter, it’s more about the wider cultural impact and legacy of the show. He argued that thousands contributed to its legacy, not just him, and fair enough — but this isn’t something you see every day in Hollywood. Especially when Hunnam personally rang him up to ask for his blessing.

Sutter also revealed Katey Sagal — his wife, and of course, Gemma from the original — will be in the spin-off too. He wrapped things up saying:

I think you’ll dig it. I love Charlie to death, and I think you will have mad love for this project as well.

What is Legends Actually About?

Let’s clear up any confusion: Legends isn’t just a Sons rehash, and it’s not a straightforward continuation, either. The logline from FX is a bit dramatic: more than a decade on, the line between life and art gets blurry as this fractured brotherhood (yes, the original gang) runs into a real-world threat even more dangerous than anything they faced on their TV show. So, the cast returns as versions of themselves… but a step removed. Not quite meta, but certainly self-aware.

The returning line-up features much of the original crew:

  • Charlie Hunnam
  • Katey Sagal
  • Ron Perlman
  • Maggie Siff
  • Mark Boone Junior
  • Tommy Flanagan
  • Kim Coates
  • Theo Rossi

Hunnam himself developed the concept, working alongside Jonathan Groff (no, not that one — the TV writer/producer, not the Broadway star). Both are executive producers, with Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel, and Jackie Cohn on the team as well. For now, there’s no word on a release date, so it’s over to FX on that front.

FX officially ordered Legends as a limited series, bringing back Sons of Anarchy’s main cast in new, self-referential roles.
