Don’t call it yet — but Only Murders In The Building’s fate might already be clear

If you’ve not been keeping up, Only Murders in the Building is still absolutely smashing it for Hulu — enough to trigger a proper shake-up behind the scenes before the latest season’s even out. There’s a major change to how they’re making the next bit, and for anyone who actually thinks about what happens between glossy announcement and the thing showing up on their queue, it’s pretty interesting. Here’s what’s happened and why it matters for the show’s future.

Moving the Brains to New York

The real headline — according to Deadline, anyway — is that the writers’ room is shifting from Los Angeles to New York ahead of a (not officially ordered, but very probable) Season 7. Hulu haven’t stuck out a renewal banner just yet, but John Hoffman, the showrunner, is acting like it’s a done deal. He wants to gather up the writing staff in-person in New York, instead of everyone working remotely from LA and flying out only when it’s time to shoot.

Season 6 arrives on 8 December 2026, after the longest break the show’s had between series — a full 15 months since Season 5.

This move’s partly down to the chaos they’ve just wrapped up shooting for Season 6 in London, which apparently broke the old system. Before, the team used to write scripts in LA, then Hoffman would hop over to New York for filming. With tighter timelines and Season 7’s likely return to New York-based stories, they’re now going for writing and production to run side by side — not one after the other, the way most US telly does it. Expect scripts and scenes coming together at the same time, in the same city. Makes sense if you want to keep up the nearly-annual release rhythm they’ve managed (aside from this most recent gap).

Why the Rush?

There’s a bit of a streaming trick at play here. Platforms like Hulu often kick off a writers’ room for a new season before they even officially announce the thing, just to reduce the time fans wait. They get the team plotting away, so if and when the greenlight comes, production’s already sprinting out of the blocks. Season 6 is due this December, and the gap after Season 5 is the show’s longest yet (largely thanks to that London shoot).

The People Involved

Assuming everything falls into place, a lot of familiar pencils — well, laptops — will be moving to New York, with plenty of returning writers expected. On the production side, Steve Martin is still co-creator with Hoffman, and executive producers for Season 6 include Martin again, Martin Short, Selena Gomez, Dan Fogelman, Jess Rosenthal, Ben Smith, Jennifer Crittenden, and Gabrielle Allan — so, business as usual at the top, just with some new scenery for the process itself.
